GSmartcontrol test log help

Customer wants reinstall Windows 7 Home on Compaq Presario CQ57, right now it has Ubuntu. He asked me to get him a quote. I ran GSmartcontrol (Parted Magic) short and extended test and both passed. Just want to be sure that is HD is fine and no need to replace it. Can any one tell me what I should be looking in these results? Thanks.

As the drive has passed both tests, I would classify it as working fully. There you can install windows on it.

It's hard to state what you should be looking for with those results, as the drives tested fine.

tells me it's been moved around while powered on even though there appears to be no ill effects. never good to transport a mechanical drive while it's powered on and in use.

Thank you, guys. Appreciate your help. I spoke to the customer and explained that it may be a problem in a future with HD (G-Sense_Error_Rate) but now it's fine.

SMART parameters are not always equal between manufacturers and some may be reporting meaningless numbers (more so when using a generic tool like gSmartcontrol to view them).

AFAIK, the G-sense is used as a warranty invalidator, rather than anything meaningful. WTF is '3178' in the real world? With 1359 working hours, is that three heavy shocks per hour? I doubt it.

I'd be completely happy putting that drive into service because:

• Long and short self-test are good;
• Total hours is low (though the ratio of P_O_Hours to Power_Cycle_Count is high – only switched on for an average of less than an hour and a half each time);
• Most important, no reallocated sectors.

Personally, I wouldn't have reported anything to the client, except to point out that your tests show the drive to be in good health at the time of the tests and that hard drives may fail without warning, so there is no guarantee.
