Boot hangs can be really frustrating; it is well worth studying the boot process closely, as the point at which boot pauses can be highly informative.
I just had a pig of an one, (not like yours but all too common) where an Acer laptop booted (after POST, BIOS was OK) to a flashing cursor only on a black screen. There were no error messages, in fact no messages at all.
One technique that can be useful is to use some external program (not Partition Magic with Vista) that can make a change to the partition, resize, move etc.
When you have got the machine booting again return the partition to proper size/position.
