How to crack a forgotten password using SamInside? Or any software?

I have a customer who has lost the password to there xp machine. This is an older machine. I have tried to use ophcrack and multiple linux live cds nothing has been able to load up on it. I now want to slave the drive and use SamInside. but Im not sure how. I have tried to import the sam file and the system.nt file out of c:\windows\repair folder but it just says "you do not have suffiecent privileges to access file" or something like that. What should I do and how do I use SamInside to crack the password.

Have you tried Ultimate Boot CD? I've used it on plenty of older machines.

It sounds like you need to take ownership of the sam and system files on the hard drive. If you have XP Home, you'll need to do this from safe mode. Follow the guide here and then try SamInside again.

The computer is xp home but the admin account is the account that I can't get into. I have not used ubcd, I downloaded a copy a few weeks ago but It was like a dos version and not the gui version. Did I make the disk wrong or download the wrong thing?

There is no GUI version of ubcd afaik, it simply has text menus.

You want the option that says "Offline NT Password and Registry Editor". You can reset the password from there.

When you say the computer is xp home, do you mean the customers computer, or your computer? When I say you need to take ownership of the folder, I mean your computer has to take ownership of it. So whack the customers hard drive into your computer, then change the folder ownership from within your windows install. This should hopefully give you the right privileges to access the SAM file from SamInside.

I hope that makes sense.

I used to work for a a big box company and I have the ubcd version we used there which has a gui and everything.

My computer is a windows Vista home premium laptop the customers is a xp home machine 2 5gig hdd and some other crap.

Now you mention it, it was Hiren's Boot CD I was thinking about when I said it had an all text interface.

Unfortunately Hirens CD isn't exactly legal. UBCD is very similar to Hirens
for removing SAM passwords though, plus it's legit.

Hey Simmy Thanks a lot the ubcd worked. It was really simple the only thing was you had to know where the sam files were located other than that pretty simple. After that the system ran really slow crawling, and It could not recognize a usb keyboard or mouse really wierd it recognized flash drives though. I tested the keyboard and mouse on another unit and they work fine. I noticed that the leds on the keyboard don't come on until the windows logon on screen shows up whilst with a ps/2 keyboard they show as soon as the system is on. Anyway the unit is a Gateway Professional M1000 with 64mb ram 8.5gb hdd space and socket 370 pentium III. I want to tell them to upgrade to 20gb and at least 512mb of ram

ACTUALLY, there is a gui version of the UBCD. It's called UBCD 4 Windows and you have it highlighted in your screenshot....ROFL!!!

Build the UBCD4Win, boot to same (select option shown above), then find Sala's password renew in the start menu, and use it to reset the password.

Most of the whole CD is warez. Thats why its one of the best out, because basically it's all commercial software bundled onto one non licensed boot disc.

Hence the reason ubcd is out there, it's the freeware alternative.

When I said I recently heard of it, it also meant I got a copy. I really had no idea what it was but I'm always on the lookout for any useful CDs/apps/etc. I stuck it in a pc one time, but didn't really play with it a whole lot; I guess I'll have to look into it further now. I do occasionally take the time to build new UBCD4win CDs, too. Thanks for the info.

new here but thought i would post a quick reply sometime ago i purchased
password removal app that allows you to creat a bootable CD which when
you boot on system you need to reset the password on
it picks up any admins and users in and give's you option of setting pass to blank or whatever i have used this on several genuine customers systems who have forgotten their pass etc
and works a dream quick without hassle
I just called it pass removal but if anyone wants the name correct name of the software i will go dig out the original software and site i got it from etc

There is a lot you can do when locked out of an XP machine. You can first reboot in safe mode with F8 and get in to the built in admin account that most systems have. If its the admin account thats locked you can simply reset the password using many different utilities. If you need the admin pass you can boot with a Linux disk and copy the sam files and crack them later. Its not rocket science. Im not sure how much of this works with Vista.
