I have a system drive in a SATA dock because the motheboard of the old system died. Migrating all user data and settings to new computer.

The programs I usually use to retrieve Outlook passwords such as POP3 do not work for a nonbooting drive like this. What would do this?

I would be curious to the answer as well. In the past, I've been able to load the slaved os drive in qemu, then run the normal tools.

I have tried 4 or 5 demo/trials but none found these passwords. Most of these programs are around $25, and I am willing to buy a program but not without seeing a strong indication that it will work.

MailPass View was my first choice. It usally works great but not on a nonbooting disk.

No, I have not imported the PST files into my system yet. I was trying to avoid that if at all possible.

I asked the mighty Nir Sofer himself once if that was possible (retrieve it from a slaved system) and he didn't think so, and gave me a good tech explanation on why this wouldn't work which was a little over my head and I don't remember it anyway... but if Nir can't do it, I wouldn't trust any other company that said they could, because I just don't think it can be done.

Loading the pst or would be my next step

Loading the PST file on my computer will work ONLY if the PST file is password protected. I am referring to the password to connect with the mail server (POP, SMTP, etc). Unless something has changed recently, that connection information is not in the PST file.

I did get the password for the main user account which is what is most important. The other 2 users will just have to get their passwords reset.

I was checking here to see if someone had a trick that I had not thought of.

Love this ...

Me: "Ok so all I need is your password to get your email working."

Customer: "Dont have one"

Me: "You have to have a password to protect your email account."

Customer: "Nope never had one."

Me: "Ok lets just reset it."

Customer: "How do we reset something I never had."

Me: "Humor me."

Me: "What is the name of your favorite vacation destination?"

Customer: "Hawaii ... no ... Italy ... no wait its Florida."

Me: "None of those work."

Customer: "It cant be anything else."

Me: "Well it is."

Customer: "It cant be."

Me: "Lets call your ISP."

Customer: "What is an ISP."

Me: "zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz."

Yep, that is pretty much why I avoid calling the customer. It is not really surprising because many people do not access their e-mail via web service and the e-mail programs such as Outlook remember the passwords. The last time the customer actually used their e-mail password may have been several years ago.
