HP released a firmware update on March 12, 2016 for several of the company's Officejet printers that renders non-HP ink cartridges useless.

The link behind "announced" leads you directly to a note from HP explaining why they did that and (since October 12, 2016) how you can get an update of a firmware making non-HP ink cartridges working again (most likely because the shitstorm from the customers and organisations like the EFF had been to heavy).

I was looking at it purley from the perspective of the "hapless end user" who would read the initial blurb and panic.
I did know about the "firmware update" that allowed non HP to be used.

As you had seen: it worked even for the one or other technician ;-)

I knew about the original update to disable 3rd-party cartridges, but didn't know about the update to allow them to be used again. Anybody have a link?
