I am pretty sure I just need to lift it up, and the connector to the motherboard is on a flylead, but the entire laptop is flimsy and I don't want to force anything unless I am certain.

Do I just need to use a bit of force to lift up the hard drive caddy?

Got a problem where Windows and Windows CDs won't boot, not sure if its the hard drive yet but even if it isn't it looks like I need to slave it to get windows to boot.

I had a simliar HP few weeks ago, the little rubber shoes at each corner at the end near the speaker really hold it in firmly. I removed it gently by pulling the tab straight back towards the speaker and then upwards.

I guessed that but when I squeezed them the caddy still didn't feel any looser so I wanted to confirm it.

I will try again with a bit more force, very ill with hey fever at the moment so am weak.

Looking like its not the HD because the HD scan has not found any errors, but I need to slave it to run CHKDSK.

Also is it normal for this model to run very hot? It appears to be over heating but I can't see any obvious signs of dust in the vents and google suggests this model with the AMD X2 and ATI graphics does run very hot, if so I will suggest a cooling pad.

Really not impressed with the build quality of this laptop at all, even the flap was difficult to remove.

Hope your feeling better soon, nothing worse than having to work when you feel like crap.

If you have ERD commander you could run chkdsk from within that enviroment. I think the entire DV range build quality is questionable and from my experience they all run pretty hot, even the ATI versions.

You might find the actual manual here, wouldn't suprise me if you'd already checked, but I thought I would mention it.http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-introduction

Thanks, didn't want another late night but I keep laptops in my bedroom locked away at night so I need wait for the scan before I can go to bed.

I did download a manual but couldn't find the AMD one, only the Intel which is very different.

I have NTFS4DOS which pretty sure has CHKDSK so I can use that I guess if the HD is not faulty.

Yeah I noticed it looked different too, but seriously mate, if your not feeling great get yourself to bed asap, no point pushing yourself.

Scan finished now, it needs a new hard drive, full of bad sectors. They are all at the end too.

I am just staggered how many laptops I am getting with this fault. Its 18 months old.

On the speakers side of the hd There are 2 square rubber things in each corner. pop those out with a flat head screwdriver and the hd should be able to slide out easily.
Hope you feel better.

Yeah new hard drive is in now, it was a doddle actually, had a bit of a panic when the Windows installation failed due to a file read error, turned out the CD Writer is faulty too. HP you really know how to make good quality laptops

To be fair my disc is a bit scratched but my external writer read the disc perfectly.
