Hey guys, so here's the issue.

Customer brings in this machine that after boot in normal mode all you get is a black screen with the arrow. Run does not open directly but tskmngr opens and from there I am running everything. It does boot into SMWN and I can run some things from there but a lot of things just give an error {26ee0668-a00a-44d7-9371-beb064c98683} Server execution error.

Other symptoms: A lot of files that are obviously bootleg; Memtest is fine; OS seems really damaged but partky functional; Drivers for all networking devices are not showing up

What I've done; chkdsk is fine; sfc\ scannow no errors; boot from dr. web live and found some malicious file/programs but nothing serious just adware and hijackers; reinstalled broadcom drivers with latest updates-failed (executed correctly); system restore fails-error the application could not start correctly(0xc0000022) this is after is had been running 15 mins

right now I am trying to repair from repair disk (USB) and will post what happens

This is a windows 7 Starter 32 bit OS

Any ideas before I nuke and pave?

Can you run something like roguekiller or combofix ?

This really sounds like a virus messed around with the system and you need to do an assortement of dcom, registry, etc fixes. I would not go for the N&P
until you scan with more virus programs and fixes. If you got D7 you can do a lot of it in there. Windows AIO might help too. It all depends on what you need to run first to get enough stability to go forward but I cant tell without seeing the machine.

Ok i will get combofix from BC and give it a whirl. Also trying to locate a Windows 7 repair iso to load to a USB because I can{t find the recovery partition on this thing. I new to this, so any good sources of windows isos? I have Sardu but the internal link is broken for windows 7. Going to try Tweaking.com's portable AIO. Thanks Jimbo! I'll let you know how it goes.

Not entirely sure of this forums policies on this but there is a respected source of Windows 7 iso's mentioned on the mydigitallife website, plus masses of discussions - not hard to find. Windows 8 however...>>>>

Tried everything and to no success, so since system restore, even to factory, is not working, I didn't know what to do but I found a tool HP installed that does it for me....hopefully.

Called the customer and she does not mind erasing the whole thing, so I'm done with battling with this thing and taking the easy way out :D

Will post advancements.

Just failed with same error {0x000021) :(

DLed a win7 32 bit recover disc and mounted it into Sardu (awesome tool) after several attempt of restore and recovery, all failing, it was able to fix the boot. Got into normal mode first time in 8hrs of working on it. Running combofix and then tweaking....let's see what happens

in the mean time DLing win7 starter install disc just in case:cool:

Have you cloned it to another drive? Used the HP hard drive diagnostic in the bios or tools partition? Drive manufacturers diagnostic software?

If you're sure that the hardware is good and the hard drive is not actually failing...

See if you can copy the wim file from the recovery partition onto an external drive. I'd use a Linux or WinPE CD/USB for this.
The last HP laptop I did this on had a large file called base.wim in a folder on the recovery partition.

Once that file is copied off you can delete the Windows partition, recreate it and use GImageX (from a WinPE CD/USB) to apply the appropriate part of the wim file to the partition. In my case, there were four wim files inside base.wim. The fourth one was the correct one containing the full factory install of Windows 7.

If that still fails, use the clean command in DISKPART to delete all the partitions on the drive and try again. This will delete everything including recovery partition, diagnostic partition etc but at least you can recover it with the wim file.

All the hp tools were a no go. I was able to open them in SMWN but it just started the windows recovery which failed. All diagnostics were run and hardware looks good. Smart passed.

Using diskpart before i could see the recover partition but it does not have a drive letter assigned and I'm not to versed on the commands to assign it one. So, I couldn't get into it at all. Good thing is the cx has the original OS Key so i can just install any Win7 starter and activate over the phone.

Have to download WinPE to have that option available. Just started business a month & 1/2 ago so was not really prepared for this :o

Combofix is finishing just now...will add log on edit shortly.

well seems to be working. Ran MBAM and SAS with no detections. IE is still not working may have dl another navigator to repair IE. Other than that looking good. Just make and image of the machine and call the customer with the good news. Offer the image file storage for a price.

Thanks all for the help!
