Hey technibble gang, i have a problem i could use your help with. My company The Computer Doctor of Richmond along with several of my local competitors (at least 20) were recently attacked by one of our local competitors. I discovered this about a week ago when just checking up on my local reviews and found that suddenly i have several negative reviews that didn't exist about a month ago. I knew something was up when two of them only had 1 star, but no content and all three of them were within a couple of days of each other. So I clicked on all of their names to see what other reviews they've left and instantly a pattern of abuse emerges. All three have left negative reviews for many other competitors. However, all three have also left 5 star positive reviews for "Richmond Geeks."

I flagged all of mine and many others as "inappropriate" for spam, but research since then has determined this likely wont do anything. However, i have also since found out that below the review where google asks "was this review helpful?" and then saying no by many people can prove effective.

Aaron's PC support (a fellow technibbler) also was attacked and his lawyer sent a cease and desist letter to Richmond Geeks. Aaron told me that the owner of Richmond Geeks, Muhammad Salman told him that this is the results of an independent SEO contractor (Hussam Al Taher, altaherhussam@yahoo.com) and that he will correct this and terminate the services of this SEO contractor. I don't know if there is truth to this claim about an SEO contractor gone rogue or not, but I do know that as of today 6/12/11, the negative reviews for Aarons PC support are still there (page 2)

While I haven't sent a cease and desist yet, my negative reviews are still there too (page 1 and 3) . One by a user called Marcos, sheriii and geeks shadow

I've already contacted many of my fellow victims, that's how Aaron and I got in contact. Many of them were somewhat concerned, some of them didn't seem to care and only a couple were really ****** like me. I work very hard to maintain happy customers and if I had earned a poor review then i would take it on the chin, and do better next time. But none of us earned these.

So right now you're probably asking, "how can i help?" Well, thank you for asking and volunteering your assistance. I really do appreciate that. If you have a few minutes that you can click on each of the names below and where google asks "was this review helpful?" please select no. There are many more than just these few google id's, but i just don't have time to list them all. I'll also be posting this over at podnutz, so you might see this posting there too.

ALB tech's list of 10 bogus reviews

Also, if you haven't taken a look at your google, yahoo or bing reviews in a while, you probably should.
Thanks again

Thanks Kevin for contacting me about this issue in the first place... it is greatly appreciated. After talking to Kevin on the phone I can reliably say he is the real-deal, a stand up kind of guy.

I would like to piggy-back this thread and ask for the same support from my fellow Technibbles out there.

My places Ad is at http://maps.google.com/maps/place?c...UTF8&ll=63.194018,-163.388672&spn=0,0&t=h&z=4

on the second page there are two reviews a 1 star and a 3 star review under the names "sam" and "elton". You can click on each of these names to see that they rated "Richmond Geeks" at 5 stars.

The 3 star review came about AFTER the cease and Desist letter was sent! What balls.. I tell ya.

Thanks in advance.

Just want to make sure I am understanding this correctly...

One guy who is doing SEO work for a specific company is purposely spamming local businesses in your area in order for his client to benefit?

Why don't you guys get together along with any other local guys impacted, and take this guy to court? Not only should you send him the cease and desist letter, but go after him for damages due to the defacing of your business's reputation. I am no lawyer, but seems like you guys would have a strong case, something like this negatively affects your business. I would also go and save any evidence you could such as screen shots, video captures, etc.

On that note, sorry to hear this has happened to you, I really hope you guys get this fool.

I agree with ProTech but is the guy who gave the bad reviews based in America or did the competitor hire an out of country "seo" service. I understand that my grammar isn't the best but it seems as if the fake reviews are written by someone whose first language isn't English.

By the way I also flagged the reviews as spam and unhelpful

I don't know if the SEO contractor is US based or not. But i can tell you that with the accent of the owner after I spoke to him, I highly doubt he was born state side. It seems likely that the same goes for this SEO contractor.

This very likely might be where ends up. I've already spoke to a lawyer and while I'd rather not take this to the courts, I'm not going to simply ignore this either.
I've already gathered numerous screen shots for all of my bogus reviews and many of my fellow victims.

These types of practices infuriate me. Even if you send the letter and mark the review as spam will anything happen to the violating business or "SEO company"? Any SEOer that would practice this should be flagged either by the better business bureau or through Google reviews. Very sorry this has happened to your business.

Better business bureau is a joke. Also with the ability to create email accounts quickly Google can't do much more than remove bogus reviews.

Are they even a member of the BBB? I couldn't find anything indicating they were...

No they are not. But I still filed a complaint.

I just spoke with Mohammad Salman (owner of Richmond Geeks) and he apologized for the actions of this "SEO contractor". He said he is working to get this contractor to remove these bogus reviews and has been since Aaron contacted him several days ago. As of yet, I have not noticed any of them being removed. I encouraged him to get the id's and passwords for the accounts to make sure they are removed himself.
