Just got a Dell Inspiron B120 laptop in with a failing hard drive. The drive is 2.5" ide 40GB.
Hopefully this is not a stupid question..I have been looking online without much success for a replacement. Can anyone tell me where a good place to purchase a new ide 2.5" hard drive or is there a sata to ide connection that I can use that fits inside where the hard drive goes.

I have looked on D&H, Tiger, Newegg with no success and found 1 on Amazon. What is everyone doing when a replacement is needed.

thanks for any advice, been a long time since I had to deal with a 2.5" ide hard drive.

If you really must get a new one you can find them on ebay. Just look for a seller with a good rep. Sometimes companies buy lots of drives but never use them and then sell the lots cheap.

That machine should easily take a 80gb, which would be much better performance wise than a 40gb.

Be sure not to get too large a drive (80gb should be fine), you might find the BIOS can't read it at all and acts like the drive isn't there. (Might be fixed with a BIOS update).

I've not heard of any method of upgrading a laptop to use SATA but since you would still be dealing with the same interface and controller it would not see any benefit beyond adding complexity.

My supplier I use is pretty good about finding oddball stuff but that's what I pay him for so he's not cheap. Without that I'd say ebay or amazon it up.

Good luck!

i got loads here :) in a pile.

If you pay the postage and a few quid you can have one of mine. All tested with Seatools and sentinal.

Got a pile of about 200 laptops that we use for parts if needed. Wish i put them all on ebay a few years ago now doing nothing with them unless we need a part from them.

message me if you want it.

Thanks
Dave
