In a quandary...

After reading all the above posts, and the article linked by @Kraken my only question is, just what in the hell was said that was so offensive? You cannot expect us nor anyone else to come to a conclusion without all the facts. This is the biggest major issue with everything out there today. Too many hot heads looking for their 15 minutes from anything just to stir up and start sh*t.

I am sure if a race existed like @Kraken avatar, they would have a meltdown and cry fowl and begin rioting because your obviously identifying as a race you are not. See how crap gets out of hand so easily? Too many damn people want to be the PC police when 80% of the crap that goes on really had no reason too, but thats what happens when ignorant people want their part of the lime-light.

Hate Crime??? WTF? So insulting someone indirectly with a racial slur is now a Hate Crime. I really hate the entire term Hate Crime. To me Murder is Murder and we should not be placing more emphasis on the motives. The murdered spouse killed in a jealous rage over an affair is just as dead as the people killed in that Jewish Temple a few weeks ago in the USA. Labeling this stupid email under that same banner does a disservice to the whole idea.

I'm not PC at all but the work Paki has been racially charged since the 80's at least. It's the less offensive south Asian equivalent of n****er. I mean you'd have have be blind to not notice that it's NEVER used as an actual abbreviation of Pakistani and the only time your ever really hear is in something like "why don't don't you **** off back home ya paki *******". I do think that someone losing their job over one off-colour comment is ridiculous but still, it sounds as if it was meant to be racist and offensive.

the other guy is resigning with immediate effect.

I'll note that this part was notably not included in the story.

You can also tell that it's a small operation by looking at the masthead - everyone's using what looks like personal Gmail, Hotmail, etc. accounts.

If the company survives (likely), you might suggest a business domain of their own and email addresses on it - if they are actually personal accounts, will the now-gone person still be getting a bunch of work-related email for months and how will that get to whoever's handling advertising going forward?

I added quotes and italicized what was said to make Niges post clearer.
I see now, thanks. However, how is that considered a hate crime? You could just as easily replace that word with Brit, Aussie, American, etc. I dont know about overseas, but here in the US if you replaced that word with African-American, or worse the N word, it would be war on the streets, however, replace it White, and all would be fine. Hippocraticy at its finest.

Seems that people whom find offense to anything pick and choose what to find offensive.

There was also the "typical behavior of a..." comment.

"Typical <person from country>, always <insert negative thing>"

Unfortunately this type of behavior will never go away, just diminished to a certain extent. It's a mechanism that insecure people use to inflate their self-worth.

I guess its about the connotation. "Typical Aussie..." would probably be worn with pride here. Whatever it is you are probably right.

When I lived in Japan however, I heard people call me "Gaijin" which translates to foreigner/outsider.
I mean technically its true, I was definitely a foreigner/outsider. But the tone would be similar to "fucking foreigners, always doing X" which is very negative and indicates they dont want me in their country.

People come up with all kinds of techniques to attract attention to themselves.
Night out drinking in Edinburgh:
Drinks ...................................................................................................................... £50
Taxi fares ................................................................................................................. £20
Indecency fine ........................................................................................................ £500
That moment after waking when you begin to remember what you did: ..... £Priceless

In my day I had a friend with the nickname "Paki". This was in a small province in Canada so maybe it wasn't offensive, but he loved his nickname. Oh times hava changed.
