I had a guy come in saying his laptop wouldnt shutdown, it would just reboot when shutdown was clicked. Sure enough, thats what it was doing.
I disabled fast startup as that was enabled and that seemed to fix the issue, but then after another reboot i got an inaccessible_boot_device BSOD on boot.
I saw some updates were in a pending install state, so i used DISM /remove-package to get rid of those, but still get the same error.
It doesnt look like any drivers have recently been installed, but if anyone has a good way to tell the install date of drivers from recovery mode let me know. I used DISM /Get-Drivers but none had a recent date (in the past couple days)
SFC says files are OK as did DISM /RestoreHealth. HDD surface scan seems to be ok, AHCI is the only option for SATA in the BIOS. What else can i try? Is there a way to re-enable fast startup from the recovery environment as that is the only thing that has changed. No restore points are showing for a system restore.

Was hoping that wasnt the case, but was leaning towards that route before posting. Its a spinner in there at the moment, so at least he'll have a speed upgrade.

Yeah and didn't find any, didn't even seem to be any slow sectors either.
I think it's a windows issue, but possibly not one that can be fixed without a fresh install

Inaccessible boot device is almost always a defective storage device. SSD or no, my first recourse is to replace the disk.

You said it's a platter? It's dead Jim...
None the less I gotta agree with @Sky-Knight that error pops up early in the boot process before Windows is loaded. Its a bad disk or bad power supply. Maybe a bus issue but it’s almost certainly hardware not Windows. But the flaky hardware has likely corrupted the Windows install.

Before you do, what is the laptop? If it's an older consumer-grade, you might want to change the message ...
It is a consumer grade, a couple years old. He doesnt mind paying for a new SSD, but didnt want to get a new laptop unless absolutely necessary.

Well, I agree but it takes 5 min. to try to fix the boot sector & bcd, if SMART comes clean of course.
I fixed a few machines doing this...
For what? It to break again next week?

Corruption of this type doesn't happen by accident, and it's almost never due to a software fault. It's also a platter, which only encourages more issues later thanks to Win10 hating platters.

SSD the thing and move on, get a happy client with a well repaired system that'll stay fixed for years.
