Inexpensive NAS

I'm needing more storage on the benches so I recently picked up an inexpensive 4-bay NAS ($60) and four WD RE4 2TB drives ($55 each new) to go with it. Seems too cheap but if their RAID is competent I figure I don't have much to loose. Never tried the WD RE4 drives before.

Good deal.

I had few WD that series for a couple of years for some larger DASs. They lasted pretty well.

Since the box is so cheap, it likely won't be that good at reporting drive faults, so may want to check SMART on the drives every now and then.

If you decide to enable the encryption, ensure your backup is good and current. Recovering data from encrypted NAS boxes is fairly painful and expensive (encrypted RAID - not fun).

Wow at that price I would get two of those NASs in case one goes bad so you can easily recover the data on RAID, in case you ever needed to.

I want to review the details first but I would like to get another if it gracefully handles mixed drives.
