Intel Quad Core or AMD Phenom II

I to am kind of in the same boat. I was looking at the Core i7 920 but am also looking at the black edition amd, core i7 is about 100 bucks more.

Core i7 is way to much money.. For my own personal system I purchased a core i5 and that is an awesome chip. Get any cpu that is a quad core with 4gb or 8gb of ram and you can do things you never thought possible..
