Intro to bga reworking services

Perhaps this is part of a planned obsolescence of 3 years so people have to go back every 2 years to get a new computer....I don't know.

Thats the plan, manufacturers want it to happen so they give the device just enough life to last

I will also remind you that if manufacturers truly cared they would use better cooling

They choose not too, a few cents x a million = a lot

The only manufacturer i know that uses quality parts is Panasonic with their toughbooks and thats because those are built to last and cost $3000

also unless somebody is requesting help with supplies or information about process i will continue to post, anything else i retire from

Ok, so on the topic of rework station. IR vs Hot air? I know IR is suppose to be better, but I've heard Hot air is easier to work with. Either of those two statements true?

Its actually the opposite people say HA is better and IR is simpler

Its explained in the article from the OP though

I will always prefer IR, HA is just too old for me and noisy

Acesdeals, thank you very much for putting this time and effort into this op. Very good read and I didn't even finish it. I'm excited to get started on this myself.

I also have another question. I see by your links you like xmoddz, however, for those of us who want to do a lot of laptops as well as other boards/etc. What are we to look for in stencils? I am tempted to jump into the most I can get to just cover all the bases. IE: Something like this.

Again, thank you so much for the write up!

Anything consumer related is not made to last. If you are servicing business clients, like YeOldeStoneCat says, you should be going with nothing less than tier 1 business class products. IMHO of course.

Sure i figured a post that covered almost everything would be useful and eliminate a lot of wonder or uncertainty

Stencils can be bought from anywhere, they are all the same quality no difference really

However the jig and flux are the items that are important

I would recommend just buying a stencil kit separately, i purchased a large kit of about 300 stencils total

I have only used about 20% of them, but its better to have them all just in case at least thats how i think of it

Any seller you recommend for stencils?

Also, what watt are you using for a soldering iron? I see most use the chisel tip, and then most say they have it on high because they know what they are doing and can move fast. But any recommendations there?

70watts? Wow, that seems really hot, but I suppose.

For stencils, I was thinking like you. I'd rather have on hand than not, and have to hunt one down to do the repair, then wait for shipping.

I'm thinking of tossing a shopping list together, on the topic of rework stations, if you could start all over again, would you start with the 6500 that was in your post, or is there something else you would recommend?

I'm about 99% sure I'm pulling the trigger on ordering the stuff here in the next few days. I just am waiting on some more funds to hit the bank account then I'm doin it. But before I buy, I want to make sure I've got it all planned out as best as I can, so I really am appreciative for all of your help.

How do you mean start with 6500

I think for the entire lot of 90mm stencils it was around $200 to $300

You could start with getting a few of the most common stencils for now and then buy the large pack or just go straight for the large pack

Well you could go 35 watts and damage some boards and spend 20 mins cleaning lol or go with the Hakko at 70 watts with the wide tip and be done in less than 2 mins

I meant the IR6500 vs the IR6000 vs some other rework station. I just want to make sure I'm getting something to at least last me for a while, and not something I'll want to upgrade after the first 10 jobs I do with it.

And you're correct about the 70w, for sure about the time, I'll add that to my shopping list. I could for sure use some nice new solder irons around my shop anyhow.

As far as stencils, does it not matter what brand/seller they come from as long as they are 90mm?

I would go with the 6500 it has a large heater

Stencils dont have brands really they are all made the same way

Hey Tony, I'm looking for a reputable company to handle the reflow/reball work that I come across, would you mind posting or pm'ing your company details?
