Just want clarification on this, are there no 3rd parties that can reprogram an iphone 7 home button ?

we've damaged a ribbon durng repair and it looks like its going to cost £326 for apple to repair it :(

You are correct. Replacement home buttons are only available from Apple if you need TouchID to work. And damn Apple charges a lot over there. That repair would be $150 here. Did you tell them the button was damaged or did they notice?

the button doesn't work.

weirdly touch ID does work, double tap works, pulling the menu down from the top of the screen with the home button works, but it won't return to hme screen.

there is a small nic on the edge of the ribbon, i guess my tech nic'ed it whilst removing the button to put on a new screen
i've literally only just spotted it though so noone else knows yet

This makes it sound like its not a problem with the home button. Have you tried using another screen? I know it sounds like its unrelated, but with iPads you can get a very similar symptom with the power button and using a defective screen. The power button will only register long-press but wont lock/wake or power it on. I haven't done many iPhone 7s, so I cant remember if the part comes with the flex that the home button attaches to, but it may be that flex cable too.

put the old screen back in and it doesn't work with that either.

Its going to go to apple.

Tech said he spoke to Apple earlier and got 2 different blokes that were really up their own arse.

So customer has spoken to Apple, and apparently they have said they won't touch it because it has been repaired by a 3rd party repairer.

WTF, I'm starting to actually dislike Apple now. This means one small slip can make iphone 7 repairs very costly for us.

Question, why did the customer contact/speak with Apple? I would have put the old screen (I imagine it was smashed) and taken it to Apple myself, that way customer would not have to deal with it. I'd still be upfront with customer regarding the error, but that I footed the bill. That way, if Apple asked me questions, I would be careful what to say and not divulge info. Apple stopped servicing devices that have been "serviced" by third party since iPhone 4 days, and most likely left notes on record for that SN.

You have three options:

Locate a seller who can sell you a replacement logic board that is paired with a Touch ID Home Button. I've seen them on eBay. Some offer a discount if you give them the old board.

Pay client's early upgrade fee + device cost with the carrier and let them get a new device and you keep the old one for parts.

Buy a new iPhone.

They're giving you a load of ****. With Apple and their douchey Geniuses you just need to lie to them for them to do their job.

Put the original screen back on, take it in yourself, and play dumb like it's your phone and you dropped it so the screen broke and home buttons weird. They'll fix it.

The "won't work on it if someone else touched it" line is bs these days. They will even cover the phone under warranty if it develops a logic board issue or something, and has a third-party screen on it.

i asked the customer to take t to apple, simply because when my tech spoke with Apple they wouldn't deal with him, they only wanted to deal with the owner of the phone.

I can't ask the customer to lie, and its too late now anyway, its probably been logged on system against that serial number that it has been repaired by 3rd party.

An Krynn I think the link you posted must apply to USA only because both Apple and the certified apple repair centre they gave me as a contact both said the same thing.

I have a guy in Nottingham that does micro soldering, he is going to take a look at it tomorrow.
Worst case, he can't fix it and I'll have to buy a new one £550 from John Lewis, and then sell this one on eBay, someone will buy it as the phone is in excellent condition, and the touch ID still works. I'm sure I can get £200 for it. charged £130 for the repair, I'm down about £200 all in on this one.

Problem is the the customer now is aware of the issue. So even if repaired if something happens in future, they will come back screaming to you.
