Kinda odd display issues

Customer has an Acer Extensa 4620-6456 running XP Pro. He states that the display "went out" so he bought another screen online, when he got it hooked up the new screen was blank too.

First thing I did was plug into an external monitor, which worked fine until the windows screen appears then monitor goes blank. Enable VGA mode worked fine. I told him that it was likely a driver issue in Windows stopping the external display, but that the laptop display could be the inverter.

I tested the inverter with several known good bulbs with not one lighting up, so I ordered an inverter.

In the meantime I updated drivers on the laptop and it fixed the external display issue, it booted straight into windows without an external display problem.

Got the new inverter and still no display!. Checked his lcd cable and noticed a little wear, so I ordered a new cable. New cable arrives, no dice. Still no laptop display. And the external display issue is back, only works during post and in safe mode or live cd's.

Is this motherboard bad? Is there any reason that the laptop display will not work and the external display being flaky in windows. All live cd's work just fine.

All live cd's work just fine.

Does this mean that the (non-external) display works? If it does, then it's almost certainly not a hardware problem. It's probably a driver or configuration issue.

Well....

Laptop display does not work, new screen, new inverter, and new lcd cable. The external display works 100% with live cds, VGA mode and safe mode. External display is blank in normal windows mode.
