Last version of Rufus (or another utility) that bypasses Win11 requirements

I am currently updating my unsupported VM using the following reg fix. Will report when completed.

And if anyone should want the one-line registry edit file so that they don't have to add the workaround key by hand, it's attached in its TXT form (it didn't seem worth zipping). Just rename it with a .REG extension and activate it and you're good to go.

I didn't use this technique, but had Rufus "neuter the install media" instead. Whatever it does, it doesn't add that registry key, as it was not there when I checked after the upgrade, but is now since I ran the REG file so it will be sitting there.

I also don't know where it is that Windows 11 is supposed to indicate that it's in any sort of "alternative mode" when installed on incompatible hardware, but I can't find a darned thing that suggests that it knows that it is on the laptop I'm playing with.

It worked.

But they only appear as a standalone dialog if the ISO you have selected is a Win11 ISO and after hitting the START button on the main dialog.

Thanks @britechguy ! Was setting up a gaming laptop and wanted to refresh my Win11 USB install with Rufus but for the life of me I couldn't find those settings.

You're quite welcome. I thought I was losing my mind after these went to "the hidden dialog" rather than where they had been. I'd far rather they had been left visible, but inaccessible and stippled out, unless "the correct kind of ISO" was selected.

They are probably getting some heat from Microsoft about it. M$ wants the option available but they also want it somewhat obscure. You can git ya free upgrade but ya'll have to work to find it.

I wouldn't doubt it. And even as a design choice, there is a lot to be said for only presenting the user with choices that are appropriate based on what they've already done so far in the process.

If this had been presented (or hidden, depending on how you want to think about it) from the first introduction of the feature by Rufus I'd likely have had zero difficulty with it. It was the sudden disappearance of "what used to be right here" that threw me, and where I was not expecting a pop-up dialog to appear based upon the ISO chosen.

Now that this is the standard operating procedure, and it took so long for me to find it initially, the concept will stick.
