I want to run a Samsung disk utility but it only runs in DOS. I need to boot into dos which has access to the hard drives and a DVD drive.

The system is an xp based system but I need a pure dos boot.

I know it's not DOS based but I believe Puppy Linux (or any other flavor for that matter) may work for you.

I don't think it would work because of the language they used to describe the operation of the utility.

"ES Tool is a DOS based utility so it is needed to prepare a bootable 1.44-MB diskette in advance."

I actually went there and ordered the stuff but I didn't get the link I was supposed to get.

I guess he's celebrating Thanksgiving early.

The following is a quote from the site

"I've worked hard to find, make available, and create some of the best fully functional computer utilities so you can both find them and download them very easily. As my site continues in popularity tho the demand for certain files continues to drive me to maintain and/or update them. So in response I'd like to request that you if you need these files that you help me out for my time and expenses for just $4 to get instant access to EVERY file below.

After completing the transaction you will IMMEDIATELY be directed to a download page that includes all the files below. Also, you will be sent an email which also provides the link to the download page."

red12049,

That page doesn't have anything for a bootable cd. I don't have a floppy drive so all the rest is useless to me.

citizensmith,

The second link got me a cd that could read the dvd but it didn't see the hard drive. C: came up as an invalid drive.

Is this a drive problem or some parameter that I need in autoexec.bat or config.sys?

Firstly, if you'd said you needed a boot "CD", we may have been able to direct you differently.

Second, if you are booting to DOS, and your HDD is NTFS, you won't see it. If your HDD is greater than 32GB (?), you won't see it.

Thirdly, any one of those boot floppies can be turned into a boot CD.

Suggest you look for another alternative, or investigate that Samsung utility more thoroughly.

ok. its been a while away from dos booting but I think if you type SET, it will list the curently defined system variables and may show SystemDrive letter. Yours may be shifted so the C: is now D: or even E:
The next question is - is your drive fat32 or ntfs? If its ntfs it will not be acessible from DOS without a program like ntfspro which appears to be a free download at http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/NTFSDOS-Professional.shtml It added a dos driver that allowed read / write to ntfs drives. This may be irelevant if your Samsung software reads directly, I don't know.
If you look on the TackTech site http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287#samsung there a list of drive utils by type and a further link to samsungs own ES-Tool (The Drive Diagnostic Utility) v2.12a (03.12.2009) bootcd .iso in a zip file.

I'm offsite R&R with my trusty phone so can't get to workshop to check value of that softpedia download.

hope that helps:)

red12049,

You're right about your points.

I can get the files of the boot floppy onto the cd but how do I make it a system disk? For Dos it used to be format a:/s or something like that.

Any cd burning software, including free like CDburnerXP, will make a CD bootable. Put your files on it, burn it, and there you go.

The softpedia ntfspro link above is for the old evalaution version which is read only from DOS, which was good enuogh if thats all you needed it for;)
