No internet on WiFi but fine on LAN

I don't believe this...
So, I found the old WD Black drive that was in my laptop before I installed the Intel SSD that is currently in it. That drive was still perfectly intact as I had not done anything with it after the upgrade.
I know for sure that the Wifi worked before I removed the drive so by swapping the drives, this was going to prove whether it's the card or it's a Windows problem.
Put the old drive in, Windows boots up and... Same damn problem!!!

What makes absolutely no sense is that it works in Linux Mint!!

Anyhow, I will get a replacement adapter and let you all know how it goes.

If you do decide to reinstall windows do yourself a favor and do a hard drive image just in case you find it not working when you get back into windows. (yes yes I know it works for you in linux but when dealing with Atheros, expect the unexpected)

Yep, you nailed that one; as illogical as it seems.
One would (falsely) assume that if a component works fine in one OS (Linux), it should definitely rule out any fault with the component itself.

Computer repair is supposed to be about following logical steps but sometimes computers are far from logical!

Update on this...
So, this week another HP comes in for a tune-up - not a DM3 like mine but a G61 with the same model Atheros card.
The customer doesn't report any problems connecting to the net, just that it's slow.
Connected fine to my guest wireless network, can ping but cannot surf - same as mine.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I changed my WiFi encryption from WPA2 to WPA and it works beautifully!
Checked mine and it also works fine.
So how come mine worked for all that time before?

Well, I've left my guest network on WPA for greater compatibility with the machines I repair. It is isolated from my main network.
I don't want to change my main WiFi network down from WPA2 300, so I have just installed a tiny USB WiFi adapter in my DM3.

Either firmware changed or drivers. Or maybe interference from other RF sources?

Thanks for following up on this weird one. In the future if I can ping but not surf I now know what to try first.

Kudos to Silverleaf for suggesting an encryption issue!
