Online recovery download speed

Aloha everyone. I've had a cloud backup for several years, but I am finally having to use it to recover data from a drive that has failed. I got the download / recovery started and it's been running for just over 24 hours. Looks like I'm downloading around 7.5 GB / hour. Is this considered a 'good' download speed for this type of operation? If it makes any difference, the backup / restore program is iDrive, and my ISP is providing 350 Mbps download speed.

Mahalo,

Typical,

to recover data from a drive that has failed.
This is why I have monthly image backups locally on an external.
I consider online backups as protection in case the house burns down again.

If you work it out 7.5GB/hour is equivalent to 16.7Mbps so those speeds are pretty awful.

We use RedStor not iDrive but last time I performed a restore from cloud it maxed out the 70Mbps line I was using.

If you have an absolute ton of data iDrive have an "express" service where they will ship you a physical drive (for a cost).

That sounds about right. A lot those companies will throttle downloads to keep costs low. That's why they offer drive shipment options. In my book the online backups have one main function. Preventing a potential catastrophe from becoming a real catastrophe. Onsite backups are the first line of defense. But if that fails, say building burns or equipment stolen, then the online can keep them going. Most businesses can function for several days, even weeks, with just a small fraction of their data. This allows time for downloading and/or drive shipments.

When presenting various backup options.....discuss "restoration times". For residentials....not a big deal. But for businesses, some may not tolerate being down for more than...
*An hour or so
*Partial day
*A day
*Couple of days...
*A week...

We've reduced what we offer for backup services. Datto Siris is the top...servers. Datto Alto is second place...servers. (Both will do workstations but for a business, we're usually talking servers. Datto Continuity (for workstations) third. Solarwinds BDR is our "budget" offering for servers. We won't do anything cheaper for servers. All options except Datto Continuity have local devices to store a local "vault" do.....for quick restores.

Mahalo for all the replies. Very much appreciated.

I thought I had set this drive up for local backup, but it appears I only did the C: drive. Oops, lesson learned.

Also have learned that iDrive keeps files you deleted for some period of time (which is a good thing), and no apparent way to recover to a specific point in time (which is not a good thing). So, I'm spending a lot of time waiting for stuff to download that I will immediately waste a bunch of time deleting (again). ☹️

@SAFCasper thanx for the suggestion of RedStor, but that's way beyond what I need - which is just a cloud backup in case of disaster / local backup failure (or brain cramp when configuring local backup...)

Again, thanx for the feedback.

How are you getting files? Using the app or the website? Been quite sometime since I've had to recover in iDrive but I have a vague recollection of there being search options from within the web portal.

I just opened the app, logged on and selected 'Restore'. Never thought about going to the website. I still have more stuff to restore, will take a look at the website when my initial restore finally finishes

I ditched IDrive a while back. I have my local image backups and M365 keeps the important files in one drive.

I am not a One Driver user, so forgive me if this sounds stupid. How do you select folders / files for restoration? Is there the capability for what I call a 'point in time' restore? (i.e.: restore all the files that were in the selected folder(s) as of April 1, 2021)?

I mentioned the web part because it sounds like part of what you are trying to do is get ASAP certain files. It has the granularity and search capabilities but the maximum download size of each zip is something like 250mb if I remember correctly.

One drive backups 3 folders. Documents Pictures and Desktop. At least that is the default. Those are the only ones I have in it.
I keep monthly image backups locally.
I assume this was not your OS drive that failed.

Correct. It was a 'data' drive with all my tools, business files, and some customer data. Does One Drive offer a 'point in time' restore option? (What I mean by this is an option to restore all the files that were on the local drive as of a specific date and time).

I also verified that iDrive does not offer a 'point in time' recovery option.

Files stored in sharepoint have versioning... so you can simply ask for an older one if you need it.

OneDrive personal doesn't do this, but if it detects a crypto it'll let you roll back up to 30 days.
