Do you purchase 10.8 from the app store using your customers apple I'd when you do an upgrade for them? Or do you tell them to purchase it? (Then procede to install it via your favourite method)

You kind of need to use the app store, it auths the purchase, and is super simple and straight forward.

I've been telling my clients to just push the button and call me if they have any problems or questions.

This is definitely not always the case. It really depends on the context its being installed. First purchases of 10.8 then this pretty much has to be the case. But doing it that way can take several hours from having to have an internet connection available for the 4GB+ download and then the additional updates it likes to pull down during the install making it take hours to install. If I see someone has already purchased it or the machine is going to be reimaged for a business or education client then obviously I go a different route.

EDIT: Just noticed the word upgrade in the title. But anyway, Apple may already have usb versions of 10.8.x available for purchase like they did for 10.7.x, I just haven't had a reason to do any digging to find out.

They do not provide 10.8 on a USB at all. One can make one, however.

Absolutely. Once Apple gets their $20 they don't seem to mind how you manage to install OSX. But of course, they won't make it blatantly obvious you can create a bootable usb. They even allow one 10.8 license to cover all of the machines you own (or at least all the machines that share the same Apple id for itunes and app store purchases which is up to 5).

We do pretty much all of our installs via USB, since otherwise it takes forever. And we do get quite a few clients who drop off their computers for us to do the upgrade. I was just wondering how others handle the actual purchasing of 10.8 with their clients.

Well, we nor anyone else for that matter is allowed to actually sell 10.8. So how exactly are you doing the upgrade?

We currently take down the person's apple ID username and password, purchase it through the app store for them, then install it through our USB copy. I was wondering how other people do it, since the process involves quite a big of explaining to the client ie. Why we need their apple ID and that their credit card will be charged by apple and is separate from our charge.

I was just thinking about posting my question here when I saw this topic. Let me qualify, that I can hold my own on a Windows machine, but don't know much at all about Macs. Just haven't had the opportunity. Now my problem. My son has an older mac book. It doesn't have a dual layer burner. I've downloaded the DMG file for the OS X upgrade on my windows machine. When I burn it onto a disc his machine doesn't see the file on the disk. How should I be burning this file?

Thanks.

Maybe be should have started a new thread, but doesn't mattter.
You cannot just simply download the OSX from the App Store and then burn it straight away.
How did you burn it? Did you use disk utility? Are you planning to do a fresh install?

Why not just use the Mac? What version of OSX is it running ? You should not need a dual layer burner. I have done it using a regular DVD, or you can even use a USB flash drive which can often be faster to install.

The problem with doing on Windows, is that you would need to use a utility that is capable of burning dmg files. I have heard of one utility, but can't remember the name right now.

On Mac this is much easier, as you can use Disk Utility. If you are doing a fresh install, you need to launch the dmg file on the mac, to extract a particular file (InstallESD) to burn. Does that make sense? You cannot just simply burn the whole file, as it will not be bootable

He has an older macbook. It doesn't have a burner in it. We were using the DL dvd's because the DMG files he had were like 6 gig. Like I said, I don't know crap about MAC's.

As I said before, the original DMG file is quite large, I think over 4GB for memory. But after you extract the file I mentioned in my previous post. You will find that this file is much les that 4GB, and you have a choice to use a DVD or a USB

If you follow the link that Altrenda has given, that should explain this in more detail.
