I have a customer who wants to use nothing else except Outlook for email, contacts, etc.

Looking for suggestion on the best software to use for backing up outlook.

Customer wants nothing to do with Gmail or outlook.com.

Thanks

If they have a server with raids then repoint the mailboxes storage to the server raid.
or
You can also setup archiving in the options menu to store it also.

I have a client that I archive anything over 6 months to the server to keep the pst file(s) small and manageable.

If they do POP, the mail will be kept in a PST. With Outlook everything else like the calendar, contacts...is also kept in that same PST.
Old versions of Outlook, Microsoft had a PST backup plug in for Outlook

It still works in 2010 (to the best of my knowledge)

I highly advise you do not move the working PST across the network..that is a big no-no. Microsoft even advises against it. Outlook and its PST have a very heavy relationship..and the bigger the PST...it's a huge load. Does not do well across networks. Add antivirus scanning to it, slow disk..and..yeah, it's just bad. Likely will not back up properly either from the servers backup.

Use backup software to make copies of the local PST across the network as a backup.

Thank you for the education @YeOldeStonecat

Come to think of it, I run an exchange type server. Calendar appointments and such are stored there. So, Even if the workstation crashes and I have to reload it will just pull the Calendar appointments back from the server.

Thanks for correcting my backup strategy :)

Thanks for replies. I forgot to say this is a stand alone desktop pc.

Looking for something to make it easy for the customer to use to backup.

I'll second the advice to not move the .pst off the local machine, bad things happen...

And worse the only way to backup the .pst itself is to use a VSS aware backup solution to get the entire volume. Nothing I've ever tried file based will work as long as outlook.exe is in operation.

Yeah Exchange keeps no data local....Outlook with Exchange (and IMAP) has the "OST"..the cached file, simply a replica of the mailbox just to improve performance. Keeps a lazy loose synchronization to the mailbox. You can delete the OST and it will quickly rebuild, no data lost.
