Yesterday I got this mac to update so the client can use Turbo Tax. Oy, vey!

I don't know how to stop it or get into the desktop to stop the install, been stuck for 20 hours. It's doing what I think might be installing-the screen goes on and off but the progress bar is taking forever.

Did I jump too far ahead in OS versions? I checked compatibility and all was ok.

If so, what to do next, please if anyone could assist.

Edit: Performed NVRAM reset, could not start up in safe mode, pressed power button and shift-nothing.

Please help - I'm stumped.

You should be able to boot into recovery mode. Run the disk repair tools, making sure to unlock the drive before if they have FileVault enabled. When completed, when you quite it'll prompt you for a boot device. Make sure the HD is selected. That's always gotten me out of those stupid upgrade boot loop problems.

I wish it was in a boot loop! I can't even get it to 1.) Stop the update 2.) Safe boot 3.) Cannot boot into anything. I feel lost and sure do appreciate your response...if you can help anymore I'll buy you a beer or two!

Do you have an external disk with macOS installed on it? you could try do boot from that external disk an run disk utility to check the HD.
Did you checked to see if you had enough free space to do the update before doing it?

You want to boot into recovery mode. Command + r. Or as @overburnz suggested a bootable macOS media. If you can't get into recovery mode then you've got bigger problems. And make sure you're using a wired KB. Wireless KB's don't always work in PXE mode.

Where do I go do dld a copy of High Sierra? I have a Mac booted up to download a copy.

ALSO I will pay someone here to get out of this mess and walk me through it. I have had a terrible week with illness and challenging personal problems and am not handling this well. Please DM me for estimate and payment methods. Thank you in advance.

Sorry I was out all day but would have been happy to help.
Thanks anyway I appreciate your response. There was a lot wrong with it. I'll likely not take in Apple products and refer to this other shop. Started with DOS and ending with Windows over 30 years. I just don't get iOS. :(
