Cheshire Police have shared a warning about a scam - and it's hard to believe anyone could ever fall for it.

A fraudulent bank letter has been sent to homeowners, asking them to send back their debit cards as they are at risk of 'catching fire'.

The return address for 'Mr Smith', an alleged debit card safety manager at Barclays, is on Bangalore Lane, Bangalore, India.

The force posted about the scam on its Facebook page at 4pm on Thursday.

They shared a photo of the letter, which read: "Many of our bank costumers(sic) have reported that their debit cards have caught fire while they are in wallets and purses, and so as a precushion(sic) we are issuing an URGENT safety recall.

Why has this has not been more widely publicised? Thank goodness Mr Smith is on the case. I just knew my pockets were getting warm.
 
I'm sorry but if your stupid enough to fall for that and include your pin number you have it coming to you.

A quick search will show that there's no Bangalore Lane in Bangalore (though there is one in San Diego), which makes it very unlikely that this is a serious attempt to scam anyone. It's much more likely to be someone poking fun at the kind of people who poke fun at the kind of people who fall for real scams.

Well spotted. I notice also that the police didn't state how many of these letters have been received. Maybe it was a one-off -- just a prank letter sent by an individual to a friend perhaps.
 
We simply can't risk our safety with the potential hazard of these high-power/hi-current explosive credit cards igniting!
