Preferred Antivirus Software

Perhaps to ask a stupid question, I wonder what your favorite a/v/security program is to install on home computers and if any different for businesses and then networks running Windows Server.
 
 
I like Kaspersky's products. I use MS Security Essentials for a free product, but I generally don't recommend it any more. In my subjective experiene, I see too many infected machines with MSE running.
 
Adding to above reply....business networks are my bread and butter, I pretty much don't do plain NAT routers any more. I strongly strongly encourage all my clients to have "UTM" appliances at the edge instead. Unified Threat Management. Basically a higher end firewall that does additional antivirus and antimalware scanning of all traffic at the edge before it enters the network. Mostly a product called "Untangle."

So in addition to Eset/MSE/EPS/other products on the desktop, there is Kaspersky or Authentium antivirus at the edge...plus other technologies and a ClamAV initial scan.

So generally 3x antivirus products protecting the computers....1x on the computer, 2 more at the edge.
 
I would install AVG it works perfectly on my home computers. AVG is the best Antivirus software available. My dad installed it on all the computers we have, after he did we haven't had one virus. :D:):o:p;)

1) I know you're 12 but lay off the smileys.
2) Do some homework before you recommend what is now a bloated, less-than-competent piece of software. Find me any trustworthy comparative (e.g. not someone's blog) which proves AVG is worth more than the box you'd buy it in.

AVG, over the last 2-3 years, is now to antivirus what Ad-Aware/Spybot is to antimalware. It's passé. I had so many infected machines last year with the fakeAV infections that had AVG on them, it was ridiculous.
Not getting a virus is as much about one's surfing habits as it is the AV -- it's anecdotal, not proof of anything.

AVG is crap.


For the OP, I recommend Kaspersky for paid, Avast for free. But, if you'd done a search like Altrenda recommended, you'd have already found a thread with that in there.

Who's beating anyone up? This is a forum where adult professionals discuss computer repair. I'm not going to start candy-coating answers for a member that has no better qualification for an answer than "that's why my dad does."

My son is 14 - if he gave an uninformed answer then I'd be telling him the same thing. If some new guy showed up saying he was my age and gave that answer, I'd say the same thing.

I agree with this statement 110%
AVG has been sub-par for a number of years.

However I don't agree with the lack of tact used in your response to a post submitted by a 12 year old daughter of a fellow forum member.

The kid is simply doting on her father and whatever her father does is "the best".

As adults it is our responsibility to educate and build confidence in children, not belittle them. Your comment provided nothing more than what a school yard bully does when they beat on a kid because their father's views are unpopular in the local neigborhood.

To be honest, you just seem angry that we have a minor posting on the forum.

Avira 2012. I've installed it for family members who click everything and anything, download things they shouldn't and they have yet to become reinfected.

Avast.

I switched to avira a little while ago but switched back to avast after avira introduced some annoying nag screens & popups. Was nice to see avast has improved its GUI tremendously.
 
There is nothing "bullying" about saying "That was an uneducated answer". Being honest and frank is not bullying. Stop being so politically correct and realize that honesty is better than coddling. It is not my responsibility to boost the confidence of children who are out of their element. The kid wants to learn? That's fantastic, but her father's side is a better place for it than here.

And, Simon, you're partly right (except for the anger part). At 12, the kid can neither start a legitimate repair business nor be employed by one so, by that alone, shouldn't be a member here. I have asked Bryce to consider setting an age minimum on the forums.
While we don't go around sharing "adult" links or posting pics, there are some topics that simply aren't age appropriate for a 12-year old. My son just turned 14 and I wouldn't invite him here to discuss the legalities of what should be done when child pornography is found on a client's machine. By the same token, members should not be expected to curb every response they provide in case it might be upsetting to a child.

I've seen that a lot of y'all mention Kapersky yet personally I've never bothered with it.

I've been using and Trend-Micro for quite a while now but I'm interested to hear what y'all think of it and why one vs the other.

(Yes I'll go read the other posts about A/V but still interested for the sake of conversation and the thread itself)

I recommend Avast! for both my home and business users.

I still think you were overly agressive towards the kid. It was unnecessary IMO :mad:
