Problems changing windows xp product key

Customer has computer that has windows xp media center installed on it from the factory. Well his self proclaimed computer expert son decided that he could change the product key to windows xp pro and he would magically have the pro version, well he did that of course and now windows is not showing as genuine.

So I said no problem, ran virus scans VERY thoroughly and found no virus.

Went to regedit, changed the OOBEtimer. Then in Run i typed %systemroot%system32oobemsoobe.exe /a

But it brings up and says that windows is already activated

But Security Essentials says that its not genuine..


USUALLY it will let me change the product key to the correct one and then activate with no problems.

Did you change the OOBEtimer value before attempting to activate?

Yes I have done this many times before for one reason or another and it has worked fine every time, its like windows does not know that I have messed with the OOBEtimer

Have you tried a repair install?
