Seems like it's nearly impossible to ever get a clear cut answer for anything quickbooks these days.

Customer has an old windows 8.1 machine with quickbooks 2017 and wants to get a new computer but still run with 2017 for no subscription of course.

I said we may be better off just cloning to a new drive and hope it lasts for as long as they want to use it. Sounded like 3 or 4 more years until their retirement.

Have I mentioned I hate what quickbooks has become lol...well if I haven't big middle finger to Intuit lol. Such a scam for the small timer old folks that just need it for super basic needs. Of course no one wants to entertain trying anything else which is why quickbooks will get away with this year after year.

So anyways just wondered if anyone has put a 2017 version on a windows 11 recently...get conflicting answers when searching around the google machine for it.

Thank you.

I very recently did a QB 2020 install on a brand new PC, and also had no problem activating it. The client still had her original install media with the necessary key on it, and away we went.

I have QB Pro Desktop 2017 on Windows 10. No need for activation, since it's not going online for updates anymore. He just needs the key and license, as long as he has the original software to install it.

I haven't tried putting mine on Windows 11. I'll give it a try and let you know how it works out.

I have QB Pro Desktop 2016 running on this Windows 11 (23H2) system I'm typing on. The server bits are still on Windows Server 2019, works there too... but is a little crazy to get working. I do NOT recommend this configuration, but it does work... for now.

Also note, this is 23H2, I haven't updated to 24H2 yet.

Awesome...yeah I suppose for precaution I could still have them get something with 10 on it and upgrade to 11 later. But yeah I'd love to know if it works on 11 with no hiccups...no biggie but really appreciate it.

I got it working and on a new Windows 11 machine recently. Don’t recall the exact version but close to what you’re using.

edit: it was QuickBooks Pro 2014

I'm installing QB Desktop Pro 2017 right now on Windows 11. I'm installing from original disk with license and product key. I'll let you know how it goes when it's done. :)

@lan101 QB Desktop Pro 2017 installed without issue on my Windows 11 laptop updated to 24H2. Activation was instant, after clicking the Activation button, and I successfully backed up my company from Windows 10, then restored on the Windows 11. Everything went without a hitch. 👍

Awesome good deal. Thank you so much for the update.

You're very welcome. A few here have told you theirs was working fine but I wanted to start from scratch with the same version your customer has to make sure we were comparing apples to apples. It was a good time for me to try it out. It works and that's a plus for me and for my clients. :)

Yeah for sure. I know quickbooks subscription is going to get everyone eventually...but some of these clients I have that are 65-70 years old might be able to escape it to where they won't need it anymore before it gets to that point. I'm pleasantly surprised that it's still activating with no hiccup...super glad it is though lol.

I didn't realize until yesterday that 1 single computer license is now $650. I can remember people being ****** off that it was like $250 for an upgrade lol.

The subscription is outrageous and I have one customer whose books I take care of that gets ****** every time it comes due. If you don't pay it, they cut your access off to your own data.

We tried finding him the last desktop version available and couldn't get it anywhere. If we could have, all we'd have to do is move all his balances forward to the desktop version at the end of the year through general ledger entries.

Well, there are alternatives to QB, and they've been discussed at length on this very site on more than one occasion.

I know just how powerful a force inertia is, but there has to come a point where either you bite the bullet and accept the terms QB imposes or you move to an alternative. Both have specific types of pain involved; it's a matter of deciding which is less painful.

For me, were I a QB user and simply didn't want to deal with their terms and costs, moving to an alternative is a no-brainer. It's also a significant PITA, but we have these for product transitions.

This thread is not about alternatives.

It's about whatever anyone wishes to make it about, after the original query was answered, and it has been thoroughly answered.

It can't even be called thread hijacking or thread drift, as it hews about as close to the core topic as one can get.
