[REQUEST] Recommend a Custom Gaming PC?

To those that think 32gb of RAM is overkill...

I can murder my 32gb with just a Minecraft client... Most gaming doesn't need it, but modded Minecraft is not only really popular, but MURDERS RAM.

*screams in Java*
Yes I allocate 12gb at least to most packs. Sucks when you only have 16gb.

Context, context, context - which those of us stating 32 GB is overkill have established - does have notable exceptions.

There are outliers on any bell curve. Those who are using software that does 3D model rendering with the ability to rotate very complex models in 3D space will murder ram. Many specific games, particularly multi-player online games with wildly intensive graphics will murder RAM. And there are other situations.

Those exceptions are that - exceptions. For most typical usage scenarios for most users, it's overkill. If you are someone who is in an exception situation, it's not. This should really go without saying in a venue such as this.

You could still build a computer and just use a lower end GPU to get you by until you can snag a good for a decent price. That's probably what I would do since you seem to have so much trouble with your laptop. Just for reference I have a Legion 5 w/ Ryzen and I've had no problems. Even when n&p. I was running the factory Windows 10, upgraded to Windows 11 as an insider, had some issues with Windows 11 so nuked and went back to 10. Currently dual booting Win 10 and Ubuntu. I really wanted the Legion 5 Pro but it was barely announced when I was looking and no info on when release would happen. Funny same thing happened when I bought a ThinkPad X1 Tablet Gen 2. Gen 3 was right around the corner but it was "coming soon" so I just bought the Gen 2. Then like a month later the Gen 3 came out.
Would love to have a Thinkpad X1 Extreme with a 3080 Ti 16GB. Drooool.

I need to try GeForce Now and see how it works with my ping. Maybe it works great. Then I wouldn't even need a gaming PC.

It's $200 per year for the 3080 tier. a 3080 is $800 MSRP. So that's 4 years for the price of a 3080. By then, it'll be the 4080 or 5080 tier.

You're not wrong... but the "exception" is the 2nd most sold game in human history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_PC_games

It's not an exception, it's a rule. You cannot build a "gaming PC" and not assume Minecraft isn't going to get involved. People just assume anything can run it too, so when it doesn't it generates all sorts of screaming.

GeForce Now free works OK. Graphics are poopy (to be expected). Input lag with mouse is OK. Rather just have a gaming PC for lag-free experience.

Very cool that I logged into Steam and downloaded The Witcher 3 at up to 123 MB/s (vroooooom).

I live in the U.P. of Michigan so ping times are gonna be high. Nearest GeForce Now server is probably in Chicago - 5 hours away.

True enough. It seemed to me that the conversation had diverged from strict discussion of gaming PCs, but that was my impression. Based on the title of this topic, if we're talking only gaming PCs, then you're correct.

Modern games of all sorts are resource hogs for many different resources, most notably RAM and CPU cycles. If they're online interactive games then throw in networking, too.

Can confirm. We put 64GB in our standard build for our two architect clients. Also, I've got two workstations on order from a mechanical engineer client who spec-ed an unheard of 128GB of RAM, based on his consultation with the modeling software vendor. I've never put together such a powerful machine - I hope I don't regret taking the project on. If I ever get the 2 Threadrippers I ordered, I can start on the build!

Cool "The Last Ninja 2" rates up there, loved that game & music; Matt Gray.

Bought Luminar AI and it's gobbling up 6GB+ and I am just editing a few photos. Wow! And, Chrome with a few tabs open is gobbling up 1.3GB.

Total usage: 12GB.

More RAM would be nice. 24GB would be great, but that's not really an option. Gotta do 32GB in dual channel.
