Recover files from pass protected MAC

While these are viable, how are they easier than using an install disk, recovery mode, or entering some lines in single user mode? After which you have access to everything on the machine?

If you go the target mode route and are dealing with various generations of Mac, you need to have the right FireWire cable.

Two FW cables are all you need depending on what your bench Mac has. Either a 9-9 pin and a 9-6, or a 6-6 and a 9-6. I'd advise anyone working with Macs to pick some up, you can find decent ones on eBay pretty cheap.

Also, since Target Mode doesn't work with FireWire-less Macs, having an external USB HDD imaged with partitions for various versions of OS X (boot and install) saves a lot of time when troubleshooting, installing, or for situations like this one.

Yes, a 400/400 6 pin, a 400/6 to 800/9 and a 800 800 are good to have. I use the 400 400 more than you think. I also have a 400/6 400/4 and a 400/4 800, bu never use them.
