I'm new to this site, looking for a password recovery program that really works. My problem is I have an old IBM thinkpad t22 computer that was used by my boss - which he does not need anymore, but forget the password. The company controls the adminstrator priviledges which I think makes it next to impossible to obtain. The only thing which I need from this computer is Windows XP pro - so I can run a automotive diagnostic program on.

I have tried NirSof,Opcrack,Password viewer - none of them seem's to work.
The company does not support this computer anymore.

Can anyone you help me ?

WOW oprcrack did not work.. That means that they changed the way windows stores the password files. Hmm... This I am lost.

Would adding a user to the system help. That should let you gain access to the system.. There are some tools that will let you add a user via some linux live boot cd.. that might let you in...

Update. If you have access to a paid technet subscription then you get the Microsoft Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack. In there you can create and emergence cd that will bootup with some nice tools.. Think one of them was a tool to take care of passwords and stuff...

Have you tried booting into safe mode in the admin account and going to users and remove password?.

Many times people will not put in an admin password.

Nirsoft doesn't make a windows password recovery tool afaik. Ophcrack will often fail (especially the free version), you're best bet it Konboot, I'd be very surprised if that doesn't work. Using Konboot you can log in as any user account, and from there use Control Panel to reset any lost passwords.

I use Konboot pretty much everyday, I've stopped asking clients for their passwords now because I just don't need them :). It's so quick and easy, and doesn't leave a trace

When i get home i'll fire up some virtual machines and test it out.. :) again thanks...

I tried konboot many times i could never get it to boot on quite a few systems so i don't use it.

Have you had trouble with it like this?.

Something is wrong.. the size of those files are tiny.. tiny... way to small to contain a boot image. Plus my anti virus kicked in....

I use Windows Password Reset from http://www.resetwindowspassword.com/

I ended buying it as none of the usual tools would work on Windows 7. It has more than paid for itself. All it does is remove the password. the application you download simply writes and image to cd which you boot from.

If it has a local admin password in the SAM database then any of the common password reset tools such as Offline NT Password & Registry Editor will do it in seconds.

However it this laptop was part of a domain and off-domain/local logon was via a cached domain password then that is not held in the SAM and cannot be reset. The hash can be recovered and `then cracked but this is not all that simple (look into pwdump and similar apps).

Also it is possible that domain policy will prevent logon using local passwords meaning that even if you find and reset the local admin password in the SAM you still cannot logon. I've seen this policy in place at several sites.

Have you done a google on "windows password reset"? Do you need what is on this computer? I would simply reinstall windows, probably easier and quicker then the time you've put in it so far. Konboot is a tiny thing that bypasses windows login's so it will trip AV. ophcrack is good, but you need to get the paid tables to really do any good if the password is complex. I've used password reset on UBCD4Win and systemrescuecd to blank the password. No idea about the domain stuff.
