Resetting Windows 7 Admin password Boot Disk - best program for it

I have used a number of password reset disks in the past to unlock computers where the password had been misplaced but I haven't done it with Windows 7 and I don't think I've done it with Vista either.

I used this file: cd080802.iso which is a little Linux bootable OS that walks through the reset phase of anything up to XP and 2003. I havent tried it wih Vista nor Win 7 and was wondering if anyone had done this yet or if they had another program/OS that worked?

I always use Locksmith in MSDaRT.

I use Kon-boot too. The main benefit for me, is that Kon-boot allows you to access the system without changing the customers password (If you need to change it, you can do that too).

Pretty much anything will do, if it worked on Vista it will work on 7.

I've had great success with "active password changer" in a very few cases where the old not-so-faithful NT Offline password/registry editor has failed me, but again that was rare. Unfortunately that utility is not free, but it's cheap and it's far easier (less prompting for this an that,) faster to boot (DOS based not Linux) and generally more user friendly than other boot disks.

I've not tried MS DaRT's locksmith before but I'm sure it does the job just fine.

Now of course I must say (and plug my product) that if I don't have one of those utilities on me I use D7's locksmith if I'm already booted to a PE environment or have the drive slaved to a tech bench machine.

Just a reminder that with some of the 'destructive' password reset options - if the customer has encrypted files - may make them unreadable.

One of the reasons I prefer to use KonBoot - it doesnt make permanent changes to anything - so no risks involved.
