Sata laptop hard drive question...

I feel pretty stupid asking this, but I cannot seem to find the right connector, or any information that I need on this issue. How do I connect a SATA laptop hard drive to a desktop via usb? Just like you would take the 3.5" desktop hdd out of a machine and connect it with a ide to usb adapter to scan it or whatever else you want to do.. How do I do that with a 2.5" sata laptop drive?

Thanks

edit:
It looks more like an IDE drive, but it says sata on the drive.. either way, sata cables won't fit it, and this IDE adapter doesn't either..

Via a SATA USB dock. The SATA connections are the same on a 3.5 as a 2.5.

Simply plug it into dock and switch on. Similar principal to IDE and SATA adapters are plentiful

some manufacturers use a proprietary adapter that slides onto the sata connection, just slide that off and you should have your normal sata interface.

exactly...those things are tricky. Sure puzzled me the first time I saw one.

I have one of these that does SATA and IDE to USB.

Vote #3 for this. It's a sata drive with a proprietary adapter fitted over the sata data and power connectors. It looks a bit like an pata connector. You just need to pull it off the end of the drive. Post a photo if you're sitll unsure.

Make sure it's not a 'micro' sata connector. These are usually relegated to ssd and 1.8" drives, but just check to be sure.

Thanks a lot guys. It was the adapter on the end that looked like ide but slid off. Im new to laptops, so this had me quite puzzled

haha I know what you mean. The first time I had to swap a HDD out of a laptop (and it was a fairly new one), I took out the HDD, and looked at the interface, and was like "I think I'm going to have to buy a special adapter for this." The interface looked like IDE and I was thinking "IDE on a new laptop? Wow!"

Anyway, found out about the drive cage, removed that, and connected to the standard SATA ports.
