Screwed by GoDaddy for the last time

I just recently had a domain expire that I had setup for auto renewal at godaddy. They charged me $80 plus the renewal fee of $14.99 to get the domain back. I explained to them that I have been a loyal customer for over twelve years and have done many thousands of dollars in business with them. I may as well have ****** in the wind. This is not the first time they neglected to warn me of expiring domains. They have my correct email address not to mention my postal address and phone. I think they have outgrown their support system.

I have decided to move all my hosting accounts to my own servers and find another registrar which brings me to my question. Who do you guys prefer to use for your domain registrar and who have you had the best support and business with?

Thanks

I've used GoDaddy like yourself for years but no problems myself. I also use ENOM with no problems.

I can understand you're frustration, but you can't solely rely on those automated systems. I have 15 domains that are registered via godaddy and they come up for renewal at various times during the year. I have my own reminders set - for instance I set an event in Outlook to remind me a week before expiration. I also have a weekly day planner where I write a reminder on a day a week before expiration.

I'm not intending to be insulting, but it's your fault the domain expired, not godaddy. I feel this is something you need to keep on top of and not rely on anyone but yourself for reminders.

It is on automatic renewal... By your thinking, a lot of stupid things that companies do can very easily be resolved by just telling your customer they should have paid more attention.

If the feature doesn't work, then don't offer it. If it works most of the time and fails for some unknown reason, then it didn't work as advertised and the company should make it right with their customer, not charge him $80 for their poor programming.

If I asked you to take my kid to school for me, you agree to do so, and when the time comes around you don't, who's at fault?

edit: This may actually be a ploy by GoDaddy to gain more money. $80 + renewal is better than just the renewal. It is no different than them registering domain names that were recently searched for but not purchased then offering them for sale.

I've been using godaddy for a while and never had a problem. If the domain expires there is not much they can do. After a domain expires it can be few hundred dollars sometimes to get the domain back. The domain goes into a "redemption period" and it costs more money to get the domain back...

All domain registrars will charge you the fee and godaddy seems to be pretty good with price and service is great usually. Where can you get a SSL for less then 20 bucks?

I have over 200 domains with them... They usually do a good job...

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into them. Please continue to send more.

@ Alan22

I agree with you that it is my fault at the end of the day. I setup auto renew for the times when I get too busy and may overlook a domain that's coming up for renew. Most of the time their system works great and they notify me that a domain is about to expire and it auto renews. This time their system failed. That's why I don't think they should charge me $80. The fact is when you are ever in my position you will see that they don't care about how much money you have spent with them or how long you have been with them. If I treated my customers like that I wouldn't have any customers. I mean come on, how hard would it be to send out a letter or give the customer a courtesy call. When making $80 is more important than keeping a loyal customer then your priorities are not where they should be.

I have decided to sign up with Tucows and become my own registrar and host my own domains. Then I know who I can depend on.

1and1.com has been very good for me.

I've been using http://www.alphaomegahosting.com/ since 2003 without a single problem. These guys are TOP notch and the support is amazing. It is by far the best support I've received from any company I've ever done online business with. Period. And no I'm not making a commission.lol

You can send a support ticket to these guys and you choose the urgency. If it's not an emergency, don't say it is. But if it is, mark the ticket as such. I've never had a ticket, even when marked as "low" importance, that wasn't replied to within 6-8 hours and that is a holiday weekend. The rest are answered either immediately or within 30 minutes. Amazing guys. They have some great prices too, like $5/month for 500MB storage and 10GB transfer.

I cannot say enough good things about these guys. They seem to be a smaller host with amazing reliability and the best support I've ever experienced.

Oh and their auto renewal has worked every year for me on 3 domains.lol
