Secure erase mSATA to upgrade firmware

Hi all.
I've never encountered this before, so I can use a little help.
Backstory: Got a HP folio 13-2000 in for random rebooting. Sometimes it would load Windows (7x64) fine, run everything etc., restart no problem, etc. Sometimes it would just shut itself down with no errors, no warnings, and then reboot with the standard "Windows recovered from an unexpected shutdown....". Sometimes it would reboot when loading Windows, sometimes when checking the BIOS settings, sometimes when booting from a USB flash drive etc. I managed to run a full Kaspersky offline scan which came up clean, then I managed to check with D7 malware scan and there was nothing really wrong there either.
Updated Windows and some drivers, but this seems to be a hardware issue due to the fact that it happens even without Windows loaded.
The RAM tested OK via memtest86+ latest version.
I can't test the HDD because it's an mSATA drive and I don't have another machine to install it into. I can't run the tests from the problem machine itself because it reboots in the middle.
I saw on the HP site that there's a firmware update available for this SSD, but they say you should secure erase the drive before applying the firmware.
I tried to backup the files before doing the secure erase, but it crashed during the backup.
Thankfully, the client doesn't really care about the files. He's willing to do a nuke and pave, as long as I get it back to him tonight.
The questions here are:
1. How can I secure erase this drive from an offline OS? Does parted magic have this ability?
2. Let's say the secure erase goes well (though I doubt it'll happen due the state the drive is in), how do I update the firmware now? The executable I got from HP needs to be run from within Windows, and once I secure erase the drive, there will be no Windows installation on it?
3. Can I do the firmware upgrade via the .exe from a WinPE disk?
Thanks in advance.

edit: This laptop model does not have a removable battery so that prevents me from checking for many power issues. The AC adapter voltage is coming through OK. This issues seems to happen both when on battery and when plugged in.

First I would make sure to have recovery media created if it does not exist. Then, to be honest, I would just run the firmware update since they do not care about the data.

I'm guessing the secure erase option to make sure that the entire device is touched so bad blocks can be re-assigned. I'm also guessing that the firmware update is to address something like detecting and re-assigning bad blocks. I do know that Apple has had problems with their mSATA drives on the Retinas and MB Air's.

Here is a discussion about trying secure erase an mSATA.

Parted Magic is a Linux Live CD so yes to question 1.

I would be concerned about flashing the firmware on that SSD with the state that laptop is in right now, you may end up bricking the SSD if the laptop shuts down in the middle of a firmware upgrade.

Does the laptop ever shut down at the BIOS screen or while running a Linux Live CD with the mSATA drive out?

If the drive is installed, yes, it has shut down both at the bios and with a live cd. If I took out the drive, it was stable.
