You need to stop using your tools as a crutch and teach yourself to recognize things manually. Get to know Autoruns, Process Explorer, and System Explorer. They're fantastic and don't do any decisions on your behalf.

While MBAM/SAS/etc are great, there is no substitute for being able to look at the list of running processes and autostarts and recognize most of what's wrong with a machine.

While I agree it's good to know all the tools available to fix a virus, I don't agree with you that using MBAM, et al is a "crutch" or that there is something wrong or less pure about using scanners. The objective is to cure the virus for the customer and in most cases these things can do it. There are no extra points for style.
