Hi, I got a costumer laptop (Toshiba Satellite L655D) with a broken LCD, I replace it a few months ago, no the computer is back because sometimes the LCD wont start up. Well I turns that the LCD is working but the computer sometimes don't detect that the screen is open. Anyone know what part exactly is in charge of telling the computer that the screen is open?

This is what I call a hinge switch. Looks like a small button has only 2 leads from it, and is normally very small.

They are different across models and types.

I would open it up, find the switch. Check the leads for rubbing and missing insulation. Check the cable connection to the motherboard. :)

Hope this is helpful.

Will check that.

There are two small cables connected to the each hinges to the video cable.

One is probably wifi antenna. The other maybe what you are looking for. Wifi antenna is usually black and grey, or black and white. The lid switch normally has two of the same color wires. Usually black in color.

Yes the wifi antenna is there too, but there is one connected to the webcam cable and the other to the back of the LCD.

I think they use a magnetic switch now, take of the screen bezel and look for the actuating magnet on the inside of the bezel.

Thats the magnet, it seems to be working, but what I cant get is why it is working sometimes and somes dont.

Ok, the magnet is on the bezel, as you have found, the switch is built in to the motherboard. It is not a moving/mechanical part, IF it's faulty you are probably looking at a replacement board.

To test it, start up the laptop and place a small magnet (use the one in the bezel) over the area containing the switch. See if it turns the screen off.

Note: Keep magnets away from hard drives!!

L655D uses AMD Vision, which in my opinion is just as bad as the old nVidia gpu issue.

Just reflowed three of those last week. Could definitely be the switch, could also be early signs that the gpu needs reflow/reball/thrown out...however you choose to deal with that kind of thing

Tried using a small magnet and it worked, but after a few off and on, it started doing the same, and after a few more it stop doing it, LOL

See if there is anything you can do to defeat the "what to do when close lid"

I don't know if you are seeing this right at boot time or only when windows is running. But if you can defeat the "closed lid" sensor then you can tell your customer to live with it. Also check the BIOS if there is any screen control in there.

...oddly enough I have the exact same laptop in my possession right now. I thought it was the screen because the backlight is off but I can see the faint display with a flash light. I managed to get the screen working with a magnet one time but then after that the backlight remains off and I cant get it back again. Is yours displaying a faint display with no backlight either? or is yours completely dark?

Edit: maybe im having a cable issue too

Mine is complete off, today I received the replacement cable. Going to work on it tomorrow.

Crazy that I have a L645D today with a very similar issue, mine'll turn on but not actually POST, assuming at this point it's the video.

14049752, if you can see this, what do you charge for those reballs?

I don't have the skills to do reballs. I just reflow, with a general disclaimer and a warranty.
Honestly, it's not something I'd want to take on for a mail-order repair, simply because it's prone to failure.
