Trackpad not working

So going to try to keep this one short.. It's driving me nuts and I'm out of ideas.

I have an Acer Aspire E5-511 Series on the bench running Windows 10. Initially the problems are: Start menu not coming up, works in new user. Okay... I'll tackle that later.

2nd Issue: trackpad not working. Fair enough. FN+F7 fixes that. Great. So I get everything cleaned up on the machine and do a backup and system restore point to try and get the Start menu issue fixed... i went blue in the face, and unfortunately since it;s running 1709, I can't use that trick in https://www.technibble.com/forums/t...-windows-10-avoid-that-profile-refresh.74556/

So....new user works. so I was going to move everything over. So Fabs and done. I decide to update the drivers with SDI. reboot. trackpad not working... FN+F7...nadda... no cursor or left/right click nadda.
plug the mouse in, works. cursor comes up and works.

Device manager....no trackpad...okay... so let's install the driver for the unit from Acer's downloads page for this unit. 2 drivers for 2 different trackpads.: Synaptics and ELANTECH. I installed both, but I'm sure SDI showed it was the Synaptics when it did it earlier but, old age....and stuff.

Nothing works.

I got the go ahead to just backup and do a complete Windows 10 restore, erasing files and installing windows 10 again. Get back to the main setup screen and the trackpad is still not operational... I'm clueless at this point but I'm sure I'm missing something.

No not yet. I'll try that one next. and then attempt a manual install of the drivers. I'm just curious as to why, since I removed the trackpad and did a windows 10 restore, it's still not showing up.

I've had some more time to look this up and saw some posts (from 2015 but still could be relevant) that the Bios change for the trackpad from advanced to basic seems to do something, but also forcing an install of the I/O drivers for windows 8.1 installed in compatibility mode.

I know for a fact SDI installed some new i/o drivers and it's possible that caused the issue with this model.

Did you ever get the trackpad to work?
Does it work during the install?
Maybe faulty hardware.
Try in a bootable disk to see if it works.

I'm out of my office for the day. I'm going to check it out again this evening. it wasn't working during the initial setup, I had the mouse connected as well, which was working. Thing is, the trackpad DID work before I installed the latest drivers from SDI origin. so I'm leaning towards the i/o driver causing issues with it.

I never use SDI for Win10 - just causes issues. Best to go old school and straight to manufacturer website. Then disable stupid win10 auto driver updates.

Ya I'm learning that now haha. I've had 2 that gave problems on Laptops. Desktops not so much. Seem to work well. And I turned off the auto driver updates as well. It's working very nicely now.
