OS Version: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Basic, 32 bit

I was given this computer and reloaded Vista Home from the disk. I ran updates and service pack 1 shows up in Programs and Features. When I try to install service pack 2 I get a message telling me to first install service pack 1. But it is already installed. I performed an SFC /SCANNOW as administrator, but still the problem persists. I also performed a CHKDSK /f /r and this didn't help. As I have installed the OS from the Dell disk I am pretty sure that there are no viruses or any other malware.

Every so often I get an error code 0x8007000D. I went to Microsoft's site and they instructed to run this command: fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\ This did not help.

I've performed a memory test and passed. I can get online (obviously) and do most tasks, but still would like to install SP2.

Any advice?

2 things to try:

1. Run the Vista Update readiness tool KB947821, then re-run SP2 install

or

2. Get a Vista Disk with SP2 already on it. You and your client will be happy you did, as jumping straight to SP2 eliminates so many of Vista's innate issues its not even funny. I recommend this path.

I ran KB947821 but it didn't work and I got error 0x8007000d and a window saying the data is invalid. Then a blue screen and then the computer restarted on its own. I have the Dell reinstallation disk that came with the computer and have reinstalled windows from it. Also, every so often the web page crashes.

How many actual gigs of ram are in that machine ? If 4, drop it to 2 or 3. Also the fact it is "Windows Vista Home Basic, 32 bit" makes me cringe. Vista itself is such a horrible O/S for installs on newer hardware, adding service packs (even sp1 on a fully functional Vista machine), or doing System restores, etc. But seeing a 32 bit Vista Basic install on a 64 bit machine just seems to add unknown variables I would try to avoid. Some popular repair tools on that work fine on XP or 7 machines that you try on a Vista machine you will get unpredictable results.

If possible try to install a 64 bit Vista home premium with sp1 or do the install and go straight for the SP2 before doing anything else.

What was the blue screen error?
Also, did you check hardware? RAM and HDD?

If "I was given this computer..." means it's yours personally now, consider dumping Vista for Win 10.

Having nothing better to do yesterday, I resurrected two Vista laptops from my boneyard (an old overheating Gateway and a Dell with broken hinges). After a little fixn' and a memory bump up to 4gb, I installed W10. And on the Dell I also installed Office 365, Instant housecall and other essentials. Both are running quite well.

The Dell will now be my full size laptop daily driver, used mostly for remote access and odds-n-ends. The Gateway will probably go back to the boneyard, but it was a good exercise.

Do you have SP2 on CD? I haven't had any luck with updating it for years from the web but have all the SPs on CDs and never have an issue installing from those.

OK. Thanks. I couldn't find my post or I would have responded sooner. Again, thanks.

I've tried downloading SP1 and SP2 from the internet but I keep getting the error "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site [site address] operation aborted." I've gone into Internet Options and disabled security, but that hasn't helped. When I try to install SP1 & SP2 from USB drive I get an error stating, "An internal error occured while installing the service pack. Error code 0x80070002". I've tried reinstalling Vista not less than 4 times. I am wondering if the installation disk might be corrupted. I'm thinking about install Windows 7 but am not wanting to invest in it if it too will not install. Any advice?

Really ? o_O

Maybe you need to run MORE diagnostics on the hardware of that machine, especially ram. Also maybe flash the BIOS to the latest version AND install the latest drivers from the computer/mobo maker before trying to do more with the O/S.

I was doing a Vista reinstall on a Thinkpad T61 for a customer this weekend and I too had problems getting SP2 on properly
The error above I decided was due to IE7, when I loaded Chrome via Ninite, I could download what I wanted.

the computer won't let me download Chrome. But I will keep on trying. Thanks for the input.

OK. I'll give it a try. Thanks.

What does the Windowsupdate.log tell you about the errors? (%windir%\windowsupdate.log)

Do you have the latest Update Agent? -> Wuaueng.dll version 7.6.7600.256 for Vista.

Have you ran the "Repair Windows Updates" in Tweaking.com AIO?

Have you ran the MS Vista Windows update Fixit tool
the Fixit tool should do most of the code below:

From a admin command prompt:
Code:
net stop bits

net stop wuauserv

net stop appidsvc

net stop cryptsvc

del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat"

Check to see that you have a pending.xml file, it should be here C:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml.

Check in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS and in the right pane do you see these entires:
PendingXmlIdentifier
NextQueueEntryIndex
AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving

I suggest starting over from the beginning.

Wipe hard drive.
Do a COMPLETE hardware check with a bootable CD (partedmagic).
Download a FRESH .iso from the link given by bitznpcz with SP2 already on it.
Make sure you are using the correct version.
Make sure drivers are updated most of the Vista SP2 issues I have had are with drivers.
Let us know the results, including the hardware checks run.
