$3.50 a month? News to me. Could never make heads or tails of AWS pricing.I don’t use cloud keys at all. If you have a server in your office, you could run a controller off of that. If not grab an AWS Lightsail instance at $3.50 per month and run one.
Naw, I just got frustrated I didn't know this going in, and I should have. Tried to get them to go with a Protectli Appliance running Untangle Home (with Untangle's permission) and a switch but they didn't want the management. Settled on a USG with an AC Lite instead. I figured (incorrectly) I could just run the controller on their workstation and auto start it with the machine and manage it from the Unifi dashboard. But no, since it's a java app there's no easy way to do that (that I know of). So, rather than look stoop-id to them I'll loan the key to them and make my money back in about 8-10 months. I use Unifi gear internally, but was unaware my thinking was wrong on remote management. Now I know to add another $100+ to any UniFi installs.@Mike McCall Don't add yourself more stress I know I understand your situation and I'm sure others too. Like I said you would be hard to replace so take care of yourself.

So, any remote/cloud management requires a cloud key. Desktop controller is crippled. They provide a free cloud management tool at:AWS Lightsail is a breeze to use. I have zero experience with any of the other products, but light sail is an all inclusive virtual server. We host screenconnect, unifi and our accounting system on the $5.00 per month plan with no issues to speak of.
If you want a hand setting it up, I’m happy to help.

They also offer a paid cloud management solution as well. Yet, I can also spin up a hosted VM and run the controller there for the cost of the VM. Why would I be confused about what I can do with what? Since they provide free access to the controller software, why would I pay for something else (other than internal control)?
I know nothing is free and while I should have seen the additional costs, their model is way better than Meraki! I'm still tempted to try and run the controller as a Windows service and restart it if need be through my RMM. As long as the controller is running I can manage it through their free console. For the little amount of this I do ya know...
I don't consider any security network device set-&-forget, so some management has to be included.
Ok, now you have me interested, though I've already ordered the key. Didn't know a hosted VM will allow me to omit a key. Geez, I'm behind on this. You don’t need the cloud key. Just plug everything in and use the discovery tool to adopt them all to the URL of your VM.
