USB stick has "safenet sentinel" written on it, google results suggest it is some kind of hardware based licensing system.

I tried – and failed – to get a Sentinel dongle to work in a virtual XP under QEMU, Virtualbox and VMWare.

This was for a 'prosumer' embroidery machine, not ancient, that is no longer supported by either the (newer version of the) embroidery software or the machine manufacturer but otherwise in perfect working condition and with a large, expensive pattern library. I ended up repurposing an older laptop with XP ('never to be put online'), which worked fine.

The client should be encouraged to become familiar with the modern software version – good luck!

So, if the XP is an OEM box (likely), this process is against the EULA, and XP likely won't activate as a VM. Assuming you don't care about the first one, the second one will force it into low-functionality mode after a month. So to make it work, you'll end up doing things that you probably don't want your name attached to, if you know what I mean.

A lot of people don't pay attention to this point with Windows Server licensing....when it comes to DR/BC services.....and simply migrations to newer hypervisors over the years.

No, it was a Husqvarna Viking machine but bundled software – I forget what – but the whole sector seems to have planned obsolescence as a design imperative. Shady bunch.
