Where the heck is the Ricoh scan software?

Client bought a Ricoh Desktop scanner. I've never used a Ricoh scanner, I only recommend Scansnaps. I installed the TWAIN driver and the computer recognizes the scanner but what the hell is the Ricoh software to just do a basic scan? The Scansnaps come with software that allows you to just scan a basic PDF etc... does Ricoh not????

3rd Party scan software recognizes the TWAIN driver and scans fine but I can't get any of this Ricoh software to communicate with the scanner WTF?

Re: Fujitsu... me too. Love and have recommended their stuff for years. So I thought I'd Google your problem, look up the scanner, find the downloads page, etc. Then I notice this:

Fujitsu Document Scanners are now Ricoh Document Scanners

WTH!

Not to be snarky, but is the third-party software you favor still "alive and well and running in the background" when you try to fire up Ricoh's own dedicated software?

If so, that last part of the error message, "scanner is in use by some other application," may very well be true and it's not gonna let go of it, either.

Nah I was receiving these errors prior to installing the 3rd party software.

That and also the third party software does not occupy the scanner it just uses the TWAIN driver.

Yeah I knew this but they are still selling under the Fujitsu brand with Fujitsu software.

Any scanner of that tier/level I have had to use Kofax VRS with them but they have always been attached to some other document imaging system and the Kofax VRS is more an intermediary in the system.

It was news to me. I was thinking it just happened. But I clicked through a few of those links. The PR announcement was from April 2023, almost two years ago! So, I guess Fujitsu branded scanners aren't going away any time soon.

I've been using VueScan for years. Don't use any OEM software any more so I avoid all the bloat that comes with it.
Might be worth checking out for a client or two of mine. $49 is reasonable. The reason I'm thinking of it is the retirement (again) of the standard ScanSnap software. Now you have to use the ScanSnap Home crap which I think is over-featured and over-complicated. Most of use just want to scan and save to a PDF, not automagically have everything named, stored and catalogued and categorized in a funky database.

What an absolute joke ... per this link: https://fi-faq.pfu.ricoh.com/hc/en-...-be-found-on-Windows-11-version-24H2-SX03047E

I installed the scanner and then they wanted it relocated on the desk which meant it was unplugged and then plugged back in. Per the link the driver has to be manually installed via "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer" anytime the USB port is switched.

Doing that allowed the Ricoh software to work and detected the scanner properly.

Paperstream Capture and Paperstream Click scan

Leaving this here as a future resource for others.

Yeah scansnap home is hot garbage ... you used to be able to install the old version of scansnap (scansnap manager?) ... I don't think you can do that with the new scanners anymore

I think they call the old school version of the software "Advanced Mode" now ... which is dumb because there is nothing advanced about it .. it just takes out the fluff that the non advanced home version brings to the table.

The home version tries to be an all in one scan & document management tool ... it sucks at both.

Yes, I'm using ScanSnap Home on with my ScanSnap, I got tricked into "upgrading", then found I couldn't go back without a bunch of gymnastics I didn't have time for. The "new version" is about 50% slower in the time it takes to digest the scan and present the dialog where you can save it. No new functionality that I can see, it's just slower. Great improvement.

Just want to make sure you understand that is not a subscription. One time fee. Not sure why people think $50 for a piece of software you can use forever is overkill pricing.
$50 is like 4 Big Macs man!

You are probably right but I feel like scanning software is a little trivial ... the nickel dime over PDF's rubbed me the wrong way.

For me, it's because OEM software exists for the same purpose as do, if memory serves, a number of open source options.

The most substantial outlay I make for software is my M365 Family subscription. Almost all else is FOSS.

I'd have to check the exact dates and details, but as I recall you can no longer download ScanSnap Manager (the older simpler software) as of about a month ago. If you already had it it would keep working, I think. But otherwise you're screwed.
