Whoa - is it my eyes or did something change in the last hour??????

No, it's not just your eyes. Although the general color scheme is the same, it appears that the entire forum skin for the Technibble site has been changed. Sizes and fonts for the top sections of the pages is just the start of the changes.

yes everything has changed. Bryce contacted me over the weekend about it.

May be a slight teething issue every now and then, but all should be OK.

Well, tell Bryce that an announcement to the membership about this sort of thing ahead of implementation would be a good thing to do.

Taking the membership by surprise, about anything, is not a good idea.

Yep, definitely a big change. Takes advantage of much more modern features and in my opinion, its a lot cleaner.

I wasn't sure about my server guy @MattW's availability. From asking to implementation, he was very quick and he did much of it over a weekend. There was little leadup.
Basically, my server guy is damn fast and I highly recommend him.

From a security standpoint as well, I don't really want to point out when we are going to be "changing our clothes".

What on earth has this to do with security from the user end of things? You've made a radical change to the look and feel. It's nothing more than common courtesy to the end users to warn them them.

You can take my advice, or ignore it. But this entire topic would likely not exist except for the "shock factor" that need never have occurred.

Actually, everything changed, the backend, the front end, everything. Things are still happening too because things take time on a forum this large.
I was waiting on someone else's availability. He might not have been ready for a month, but instead, he smashed it out over a weekend which is awesome.

As for security, things can be half uploaded, install scripts can in place momentarily if you know where to look (though Xenforo is good that it requires creds to even run the install scripts).

One of my old forums was one of the largest forums in its niche on the internet. And being the tallest poppy, attackers attempted all sorts of things against it.
So I think that made me more cautious about these sorts of things.

From my perspective, as a user, I would have appreciated an announcement such as:

At some time over the next month to two months we will be transitioning Technibble forums to the latest Xenforo software. When this occurs, you can expect some changes to the user interface. We will try to give advance notice closer to the switchover date, if possible.

That's all it would have taken from my end to have avoided the, "What fresh hell is this?!!!," reaction when I was suddenly logged out and the whole look and feel changed at the same time.

I can see how such an experience might make one a bit...apprehensive. I'm less concerned with any "shock" factor as this is a forum and not a dashboard for a tech tool. Would it have been nice to know what was coming? Yes. Is it a big deal? No.

Of greater concern to me is my "reaction score." It sounds like some sort of personality test score or something. ;)

I might hide it, I might not.
I think I like it, its based on the number of likes your posts draw. Quite a few people have significantly more than me :)

While I don't care about (or even understand, really) the Reaction score it has been visible for quite a while now.

I seem to remember that your number of posts was visible, too, but that's gone now.

I will admit that I used the post count as a barometer to quickly "rate" posts whose title was for some reason....curious? I'm not sure what the right word is. Anyway, an unusual title from someone with 1,000 posts garnered more of my attention than an unusual title from someone with 3 posts.

I appreciate that this is discriminatory, btw - but I'm just sayin' If votes are being taken for such things, I would vote to put back the post count.

Edit: I expect that if post count stays hidden, my brain will just apply the same algorithm to the reaction score. I DO like the in-place editing!

As I have said on many occasions, "There is absolutely nothing wrong with 'discrimination among' when criteria pertinent to the determination is used."

Figuring that a relative newbie with a questionable subject line is worth less of your time and effort than a member of long standing who has the rare questionable subject line is a perfectly reasonable, and legitimate, discrimination among. It is also discrimination against, but on criteria that, in my experience, is a highly indicative metric, so it's also legitimate.

Actually, I think it's a good idea, and I was being sarcastic about the name change. Maybe call it something else, but even if you don't my preference would be to leave it. I would also like to see the numbers of posts brought back if the new skin allows for it.

FWIW, I like the new look.:)
