Windows 10 automatic driver update woes

Had a client bring in an HP Envy m6-w101dx laptop that suddenly wouldn't show anything on the display after updating. There seems to be some type of incompatibility between Win10 and the Intel HD 5500 graphic adapter. It was updated on HP's site as recently as today (5/22), but nothing I have done seems to have made a difference. Each and every time I have tried any version of this driver, I get the sound that a device has attached (like you get when plugging in USB drive) and an immediate black screen.

You can get output on the display when booting into Safe Mode. I go that route to set the display adapter to the MS basic adapter. The laptop will display when using the built-in Microsoft Basic Display Adapter for the display in Safe and Normal modes.

I had to go as far as preventing device updates via the registry to prevent Win10 from auto-installing the Intel driver. I also ended up disabled Windows Update Services as a manual check for updates still installed the Intel driver.

I'm not happy leaving it this way, but may have to for now. I haven't seen one so persistently fail when trying to use the recommended driver. Leaving it like this disables the HDMI port on the side which is another reason I don't like leaving it with the basic display driver. This client uses this port.

Has anyone experienced this issue before? Any input you would like to provide is appreciated.

I have an old Satellite P300D that I use in my workshop. I installed W10 on it when it was first available just to see how it went. It did warn me that the ATI X1200 graphics wasn't compatible with windows 10. Everythings fine with the Microsoft driver but I tried the "ATI Catalyst 12.11 B11 HotFix 11.09 V6 BETA" which is supposed to work with 10 and the x1200. Once installed it's ok, but when I restart, the display goes blank when windows loads, but if I press the power button to send it to sleep the display appears for a second before sleeping then I press power to wake up and the displays fine.

Interesting...I haven't been able to get the display to come back in anything but Safe Mode using Intel's or HP's driver.

Even low resolution mode didn't help.

I tried that, but I don't trust it. It didn't give me the option to block the display driver until after I installed it. I also worry about the next driver that comes along and messes things up.
I know but it is windows 10 and you are stuck with it. Either do that or roll back to Windows 7. Those are your two choices, until a proper driver is rolled out.

One thing to check too, go into Control Panel-->System-->Advanced System Settings-->Hardware Tab-->Device Installation Settings.

On many machines, there seems to be an option to have it not check for new drivers, see if you can disable that and perhaps it will stop the drivers updating.

The forced updates are a good idea in some ways, but not forcing drivers in my opinion. Seen drivers sometimes break a working device until rolled back to older versions.

Was going to mention this also. You can't turn off windows updates, but you can turn stop windows update come from getting drivers. Had to do it with a Lenovo laptop that keep kept getting a bunk driver causing display to go out. Don't know if it will cause them to have a bigger pain in the future of they try to install a new printer or something though.

I may have spoken too soon. Last couple of systems I've looked at, it appears that dialogue may be gone. The last couple I tried to do that to in the last day or so said something to the effect of not checking for their custom apps or whatever. Thought I heard something about a tool that would hide updates, might be in this thread. If my method does not work, check the other method.
