I'm not sure how I feel about this news. On the bright side we can upgrade clients that we know do not have a legitimate OS. On the other hand I'm sure I'll be asked to install a pirated OS just to obtain the upgrade. I've worked too hard to 'play by the rules' especially when it comes to licensing software to fulfill that type of request. What are your thoughts?

"This means that everyone running Windows 7 or 8.1, irrespective of whether you pirated the operating system or not, will be allowed to upgrade to a legitimate version of Windows 10."

Ok, so I can now start selling old machines with pirated Windows 7 and offer them a free upgrade to Windows 10 ?
I got a feeling this is only going to be China because if it includes everyone, this is going to be nuts.

Obviously Microsoft doesn't care. They want everyone on legal copies of Windows 10 so that they can sell them software via their app store. King Gillette got rich giving away razors to sell blades. Same concept.

I think MS wants to get back the market share they lost when they sprung Win 8 on us.

To the op, I don't profit from or dabble in pirated software either but I have bent the rules a handful of times for people that are really down on their luck. Just continue to do what you feel is right.

One problem that immediately comes to mind is that I can see some of my shadier customers trying to ask us to put a non genuine windows 7 on old xp or vista laptops so they can try the free upgrade to windows 10 and then try to sell them to make a quick buck or two.

IF its true that any illegal copy of windows 7 will legally fully upgrade to windows 10 then you are going to see tons of used machines for sale with "legal" Windows 10 installs from now on. If MS is ok with it then I will be too. So IF it will be ok with MS for illegals to become legal then selling old computers with a newly legal Win 10 seems perfectly acceptable.

IF all of this is true we are living in Bizarro World, but I guess we have to wait and see.

How will Win 10 play with the older hardware? I've had several Win 8 sales that also included a printer because the old one wouldn't work under Win 8. Surely an old clunky XP or Vista box will not perform well with Win 10 installed... o_O

Next year is certainly going to be interesting. I'm sure people will be dying to upgrade to get away from windows 8 as fast as possible. It could be a nice boost in revenue upgrading pc's, but could also be a lot of headaches if it doesn't work well on older pc's

While I can't comment on driver support for old hardware but I can say "minimum system spec at a single-core 1GHz, 32-bit chip with just 1 GB for (32-bit) or 2 GB for (64-bit) of RAM" Heck have even heard of people getting away with less but that depends what someone might define as "usable".

With my limited experience, I would say clients will get better performance Windows 10 than any OS after XP and up to Windows 8.1.

I was thinking about a particular couple of pc's that I upgraded from XP to Win 7 previously; The video card wouldn't run right at all, I had to upgrade the card to something that would handle Win 7. I was thinking that a similar situation may exist with Win 10...time will tell, I suppose.

I've got the Windows 10 Preview running on an Acer W510 Tablet. 2gb. ram, Atom processor. Euns better than the original WIN 7 installation.

Will MS make it abolutely freakin clear in letters wall to wall & tree top tall - to users - that will need to pay a subscription ?

Or am I missing something here? - Free forever in !st year from release date but from Day 366 any installs are on a subs basis?

Clarity - not.

And - not wanting to sound like a conspiracy nut job but - 2 late :p =but If subs based does that mean tied to a credit card \ bank account ie no cash alternative - all MS compooters now indexed, recorded etc ? Is this going to be like the bad ol days when when MS office embedded your MAC address ?

What happens if you dont renew or up a mountain in a bunker somewhere on day 366?

Question is, how many pizza techs are going to run out, install a ton of pirated windows 7 os's, and then upgrade them to 10 for free, and sell them dirt cheap and be able to actually claim legit os?

Sounds like a birthday present for the Pizza Techs. The idiots here will do their usual pirate install, upgrade to 10, and be all roses. In the meanwhile, I'm trying to run a legit shop with reasonable prices that will never compete on the pizza tech scale.

This area relies heavily on pizza techs. It would be MS basically saying--hey, it's ok that you steal. Here's something else for free with no consequences of who all you've ripped off.
