It all started when my sister in law wanted to move her computer back down stairs. she has not use it for a few months, so she connects it all up that’s not the problem the problem is she cannot remember her password. So this is where she calls me up “would you be able to remove a windows password?”

I thought to myself not a problem that be 5 min job and told her yeah sure, when I got their I start with ophcrack I remember reading something about that it could get windows 7 password on the vista version, but it failed. I then had loaded up Trinity Rescue Kit and use the tool resetting tool to clear the password, it said it work and after rebooting I got the windows login so that failed too. my last result was HBCD I loaded that up I don’t know why but I choose to load up mini xp and then select the password resetting tool click on the account click on clear password it said it done it, I rebooted and i got the windows login again it failed. So I done the same again with HBCD but this time I click on change password instead of clear password after this I rebooted again type in the password I set and it login me into windows.

I was wondering what you use for resetting windows 7 passwords. Is there something I could have done that would have been much easier?

I have this set to PXE boot, it's pretty convenient.

I'm told EDITING the password doesn't work, you have to blank it. Which has always been what I've done so never noticed otherwise.

You have to follow the script completely and quit, until then it doesn't write the changes, that's what most people get caught up on.

We had one a while back, it was mid system restore so none of the above worked and for some reason konboot just didn't want to know. There's a useful trick where you replace the utilman.exe with copy of cmd.exe. This means when you get to the logon screen and click the disability/ease of access icon you can a command prompt running as SYSTEM. should be enough to get access for anyone with any knowledge :)

I had been using Offline NT Password and Registry Editor with success until last week when for some reason it would not work on a Vista 64 edition.
That is when I remembered that I had PCLoginNow burned on a disk. It worked like a charm.

I know that as a tech I am supposed to like console type apps but frankly I like its sweet GUI.

If you you are unable to change it you can always use pwdump and run the hash at onlinehashcrack.com If you need help pm me and I'd be glad to help.
We have a 2.2TB rainbow table database:-)

*snip*

The initial page for PCLoginNow says it is now freeware and downloadable for everyone, but when you follow the download links, it then informs you that it now requires a purchase ID from any previously purchased PC Tools product.

*uggghhh*

If you are well connected to have access, Microsoft's DaRT is the most reliable in my opinion

I use the same as Knightsman, has worked on every version of Windows I have tried. Just used a couple days ago with Windows 7 on a PC that a local store had setup as a demo and did not give me a password for. I always just blank the password then once in will set a new one.

I used to use ntpasswd, but ran into problems every once in a while, including one time while I was at the customer's site with them looking on.

About 3 years ago bought the pro version of Active Password Changer (which as both a GUI and a DOS-based version) and have not had a problem since.

Exactly what I do! And it looks cool in front of the customer!
