Hi guys,

So I have a very strange problem. For example I have an HP laptop in front of me, the Windows 8 installation failed, I wanted to do a clean format but need to backup the data (and could not boot into the system).

I removed the hard drive, plugged it into our dedicated Windows 7 "Data Recovery" PC where I saved all the users files.

Reinstalled the HDD into the laptop and reinstalled Windows 8, got to the desktop, installed all drivers etc then shutdown the laptop.

Removed the Hard Drive from the laptop, plugged back into our Windows 7 PC and copied the files back using Robocopy to C:\OldData\Userfiles\

Once it was finished, reinstalled the HDD into the laptop, booted up, and... the files... they're gone, VANISHED!

Yes, I checked the attributes etc, the file is literally NOT there, it's just gone.

Have had the same issue on other Windows 8 laptops too and only soloution I've found is to copy the data to an external and copy the files back _INSIDE_ the working Windows 8 OS. Problem is, this takes longer, SATA is faster, and I should be able to put files on a HDD

Any ideas?

If it's Windows 8, chances are it might support USB 3.0. Perhaps a USB 3.0 external drive might give you the speed you're after, without the hassle of swapping drives and such.

Yeah that's true but I really would like to get to the bottom of this! Shouldn't have any issues copying files to a HDD, seems so simple
