Windows 8 password reset

Well, I'm pretty sure this has a msft login, but the problem is this acer v5-571 has no ethernet port so I get the message that it is offline and to use a previous login! So maybe the password she gave me is correct but because I can't get online it won't work????

Its just that not long ago I had a customer who created a hotmail acct but didn't fill out all the password recovery options, long-story-short, he lost the account along with all his contacts etc. This lady doesn't sound much different.

Can't create a microsoft account in Windows 8 without going through the recovery process. It will NOT let you.

And while I understand your concerns THERE IS NOT ANYTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT. If the lady lost her password and has no recovery options then she is f'd. There is NOTHING you can do about it. The password is stored encrypted and can't be reverse hacked without a hell of a lot of CPU power.

The password is cached so it doesn't need Internet access once it is established.

LOL I realized how stupid that mustv'e sounded after I posted it, been a long day. I booted to a dart cd and changed the password with locksmith, that didn't even work!

Navigate to the following key in the registry with any boot disk with a remote reg tool. You might need to change admin permissions/refresh so you can see the entire key. If you see a cachedlogoninfo value under the user name in question that's the locally stored encrypted MS Account password so you can logon to the PC with no Internet connection. If it's empty or there is no cachedlogoninfo entry it's probably a local account. I'm not 100% sure about this. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

hklm\sam\sam\domains\account\users

THANKS! there is a cachedlogoninfo entry, but its not under her user name, its under hklm\sam\sam\domains\account\users\000003E9 instead of hklm\sam\sam\domains\account\users\Kerry (see jpg) so you think its still not a local acct?

So shes doing a msft password reset on another pc, but how will that help if this laptop cannot connect to log in with the new password?

You can unlock the hidden administrator account, use that to associate the machine with your wireless network, log out of the admin account, and then it will be able to connect to MS and retrieve her new password.

I've had to do a few password resets on MS accounts set-up on Windows 8. The way to tell if it's a MS Account or local account is how it's presented at the login screen. ( See pictures)

Clarification: Under the user account or user's name, there will be an email address if it is a MS Account. The email address is their MS Account Username.

Thanks! trouble is she has both types of accts! a kerryblahblah@aol.com and another just Kerry

After you get into the MS Acct or the Admin acct you can reset the password on the local acct.

I'm googling and finding all different methods to enable the hidden admin acct, can anybody point me to the simplest?

Last time I did it I booted from a windows 8 cd, replaced the ease of access executable with a cmd executable and then rebooted. Then you get an elevated command prompt. There's probably an easier way though.

I did a quick search to try and find the tutorial I used but couldn't find it.

I'll do some more digging.

That's similar to how I had to do it. You could always get a USB to Ethernet adapter to keep on hand.

I just ordered one on ebay, I could see this happening now more with all these ultra thins!
