Zonealarm Slowing Startup Times

Hi all

I have Zonealarm installed on my computer but noticed it slows the computer down a lot when it's starting up, once it's up and running it's grand. Tried Comodo which is great but it does seem to give a lot of warnings about programs accessing the net which is why i went back to Zonealarm.

Anyone else find Zonealarm slowing the startup on their machines down and are there any other good free firewalls out there ?

Any antivirus, antispyware or firewall program will slow your start up. This will be particularly noticable on older PCs. Instead of recommending another program I would have to ask why you are using Zone Alarm in the first place. If you have an OS older then XP you should use a 3rd party firewall if you don't have a router. If you have XP or Vista both have a built in firewall that is as good as any on the market, just google some firewall tests. Reguardless of what OS your using if your behind a router you have a hardware firewall that won't let anything through and unlike a software firewall it wontt have any bugs a program could explote.

If you have a router firewall, I wouldn't really worry about a third party firewall(if it is your PC, and not a clients) I just always monitor my traffic to make sure nothing malicious is going on. But to say windows firewall is all you need, is very untrue. Because windows firewall is only a one way firewall, it only filters incoming traffic. So, you're not completly safe. Because if the user goes to a site and downloads some sort of spyware, malware, browser hijack, keylogger, the windows firewall does not catch it, because the connection is being started from user, and windows allows it to connect.

Zonealarm on the other hand is a two way firewall, and will protect you from incoming and outgoing connections.

For a client I recommend a router firewall, Windows Firewall, and a software firewall; such as Zonealarm. Because home users are so clueless when it comes to keeping a computer healthy & secure.


But yea, any kind of Antivirus/Firewall/Spyware cleaner will slow up your start up to a certain extent, depending on RAM & CPU power.

Yes well i've gone back to Comodo and everything is fine. Should've said i'm running a dual core 2.2 ghz with 3 gig of ram dual booting Xp and Vista so it shouldn't be the computer that's slow.

Yes, Comodo is a good alternative also. It gets annoying sometimes with all of the alerts. But it will suffice.
