Access Point IP changed. How can I login?

I recently installed a modem for my client after their previous one was lost in a power surge. Before this, another tech installed an AP to boost the signal so it could be picked up in another part of the house. I now need to login to the AP in order to update the settings so it will work with the new modem. The problem now is I can't login to it, even after resetting it a bunch of times. Either the previous tech changed the default IP or the AP is buggered. Model is a Planet WAP-4036. Website says the default IP should be 192.168.1.1 , but it does not work, I've tried lots of other IPs in this range with no luck. Any ideas?

Is wifi still up? If you have a smartphone or tablet, use the app "fing" which will list all devices on the network by IP and vendor. Just join the network and launch app/scan network.

If the router itself doesn't give you the ARP table or a list of devices connected via DHCP, get Softperfect Netscan and let it scan the subnet. If you're lucky, the wifi device will spit out it's name, else trial and error on web access to the IPs it lists.

I know this is obvious, but the PC you are trying to connect from does have an IP in the 192.168.1.x range?

Usually it is the Default Gateway; since, the router is usually responsible for getting data from the computer(s) off its local subnet out to the Internet (or WAN)

How about opening a Command Prompt and doing an IPCONFIG

It is obviously a little different in larger networks that already have switches and routers, but in most small networks the Wireless Router does the Layer-3 Routing to the Internet.

I did have issues getting onto a Buffalo access point once, turned out the default IP address with the version of firmware it was running was different to the one mentioned in the documentation/online

Yes this.

I just setup a couple EnGenius access points & the default IP of the WAP was 192.168.1.1. I had to give my laptop an IP - I chose 192.168.1.5 - and 255.255.255.0 subnet.

Only then will it "see" the access point, once you plug into it.

How do you like them? I was going to get Ubiquity, but had to grab a couple WAPs in a pinch & got these at Fry's....the sales guy said they were good.

I have no experience with them...

lol I actually just PMd you about which ones you used, I like using the EAP350's for ceiling applications, great coverage, ens202ext for outside, and their ecb300 for just sticking on a desk of an AP, and just started using their routers which I had a wonky time with but we shall see

Ha...funny....I just installed two ECB350s at two different sites....routers I only use Netgear for homes & super-small offices, Sonicwalls for businesses. I'm trying to push all my businesses onto Sonicwalls though.

Do you find the EnGeniuses do a handoff well? i.e.; the one I just installed this afternoon is coupled with a Netgear router....I set both SSIDs & encryption to be identical....handoff between the Netgear & EnGenius seemed to be OK but I didn't have too much time to mess with it.

One bad thing I just learned about the Sonicwall APs is they have to be hardlined direct into the Sonicwall itself....

yea I usually use e1200 for residential customers but I was seeing if engenius routers would work with their AP better in the long run. as far as handoff it would pretty good on a laptop, on a phone it was ok it depends how close together they are where I had one issue but I just setup a 8500 sq ft house with 4 ECB300's and they had pretty good coverage.

I forgot to add, ipconfig doesn't show anything in the defualt gateway. Nothing.

I found Open-mesh.com units WOW... inexpensive and they will work as a repeater without an ethernet cable. Plus they have FREE cloudtrax Webmanagement applications.

Keep in mind that generally any sort of a wireless-only repeater will cut bandwidth approx. 50%....

The third hit when googling Planet WAP-4036 shows a reset button on the unit. Why not just download the manual, force reset the unit, and start again?
