Annoying problem with the mouse?

I have a client with a PC which has a small problem but one that cause a lot of trouble and will not go away.

What happens is that they noticed suddenly that they cannot move items around on the desktop properly. e.g. moving a file into a folder. And if you click on a tab in Chrome the tab closes. It also affects the taskbar and some PDF forms.

I think it's down to the mouse function and it's something like Windows thinks the left mouse button is the scroll wheel/middle button. I found a script to reset mouse function and had it start up with Windows. This appeared to fix it for a week but it came back. I read it could be Chrome itself so uninstalld it. Again this "fixed it" but it came back. We've tried different mice - no change.

I've even reinstalled windows from scratch....and it comes back.

Any ideas?

Wired or wireless? I've had wireless mice go haywire on me like that. If wireless, first try a wired and see if that works. Are there other wireless devices nearby? Older wireless mice/keyboards can and will interfere with each other.

Well, since its your first day here I think its important for you to know that if you tell us the make/model of the computer, laptop or desktop, the windows version, etc.... it would help us help you.

Win 7 32 bit. It's a Dell desktop. Does that help?

Can you make a little video of it doing this?

Probably not in the near future. It's an intermittent thing and often sorted by restarting the PC.

But you can pretty much emulate it by holding your middle mouse wheel down and then trying to use the mouse. Which is why I think it's to do with the way Windows is dealing with the mouse. You'd think another mouse would sort it but unless we've been unlucky with mouse choice, it doesn't.
